The University of Maryland School of Medicine has an opening for a Laboratory Animal Research Assistant to work in the Department of Veterinary Resources. The Laboratory Animal Research Assistant is responsible for providing laboratory animal research and administrative support. Work is performed in accordance with animal welfare regulations, USDA, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Services (PHS), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Association for assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines.

Work in collaboration with investigators on drafting, reviewing, editing, approving and distributing Standard Operating Procedures.
Conduct and review data for collaborative research projects.
Ensure laboratories performing Good Laboratory Practice studies abide by all regulation as defined in the US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
Conduct observations of animal health, recording all findings, examinations, and treatments as assigned.
Observe, identify, and report animal health related problems as needed.
Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, daily observations of animal health, collection of cultures and biological specimens for diagnostic testing and monitoring of animal health; bacteriological, or biological assays.
May perform advanced laboratory research activities on variety of animals species such as: obtaining blood, and tissue samples, post-operative care, administration of pharmaceuticals, including anesthesia, and perform euthanasia process. May participate in the design of research studies.
Compile and may analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
May perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; and ordering supplies.
Work independently with minimal supervision.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, or field of study related to animal science.
Preferred Experience: Prior laboratory animal experience. Previous experience handling hazardous agents, working in aseptic environments, and using laboratory equipment is also desirable.
Other: Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.*
*Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Requires training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Skill in animal handling with variety of species, including rodents.
Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.
Skill in statistical interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
