Under the direction of the Sr. Director of Marketing & Communications, the Art Director is responsible for brand management and visual design for UC San Diego Alumni. The incumbent maintains oversight of the creative team and creative processes and serves as the design expert to advance the department's marketing and communication goals. Key responsibilities include strategizing, conceptualizing, and designing marketing materials such as integrated campaigns, print collateral, web and social media experiences, landing pages, emails, e-newsletters, OOH advertising, event invitations, digital ads and other project types.
The Art Director advises colleagues on brand and conceptual design strategies. Has a deep understanding of user behavior and visual design. Creates sub-brands for UC San Diego Alumni that are in alignment with the greater UC San Diego brand. Art Director directs photo shoots and oversees video projects.
The Art Director works with a high degree of independence and oversees and manages the creative team. He/she will supervise the responsibilities of the creative staff, freelance and agency partners and student workers.
Must have access to reliable transportation. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Advanced knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.
Advanced creative and artistic skills. Demonstrated experience in providing graphic design, printing, website development, mailing, and other project related functions to effectively produce and distribute marketing and communications materials.
Expertise developing ad concepts and writing headlines.
Strong working knowledge of visual design best practices and user-centered design.
Working knowledge in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator.
Advanced knowledge of production processes and vendor requirements.
Demonstrated experience providing art direction and leading a design staff.
Advanced skills conceptualizing ideas, present them to clients, and producing results on time and within budget.
Ability to provide clear art direction and consult clients on all aspects of their project.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, lead and mentor others in the department. Experience leading a design team including in-house graphic designers and student workers, as well as freelance designers, illustrators, photographers, and videographers.
Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize daily operations and projects in order to meet deadlines, ensure smooth workflow and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience, or combined equivalent of education and experience in marketing and communications.
