As one of the world's premier cancer centers, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is committed to the progressive control and cure of cancer through programs of patient care, research and education. As such, our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department plays a vital role in supporting that mission through the implementation of programs that continuously strive to exceed and set industry standards as well as enhance the safety culture. EHS is responsible for enterprise wide environmental health and safety services, including Fire and Life Safety, Emergency Management, Construction Safety, Hazardous Material and Waste Management, Laboratory Safety, Occupational Safety, Healthcare Safety, Environmental Compliance and Ergonomics. MSK is seeking a proven leader who can be part of a dynamic and growing organization.
As a Fire and Occupational Safety Director, you will:
Manage the Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Safety, and Construction Safety activities at all Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) locations. Effectively manage, monitor and guide the staff from these respective disciplines assuring that they are proactively safeguarding life and property against hazards through the use of professional skills, judgment, creativity, and human interaction.
Report directly to the Vice President to assure safety and compliance with all applicable codes as well as Federal, State and Local regulations by means of training and education, reports and metrics, and inspections.
Work closely with other Directors and Managers to implement programs.
Be responsible for programs by consistently evaluating and developing policies and procedures for key operational areas.
Develop processes that monitor MSK safety and compliance with all applicable regulations and standards, including fire prevention equipment, alarms and systems.
Direct on-site 24/7/365 coverage to provide Environmental Health and Safety services to MSK enterprise wide at all times.
Serve as liaison/consultant to senior management of MSK departments on safety issues and incidents related to fire and life safety, occupational safety, and construction safety.
A Master’s degree in Safety, Engineering, Chemistry, or Biology plus at least 10 years of relevant experience.
Healthcare experience strongly preferred.
Proven ability to lead Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Safety, and Construction Safety programs based on knowledge of federal, state and local regulatory agency rules and regulations.
Strong background in EHS healthcare requirements under Joint Commission, Department of Health, and US Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, including overall program implementation, inspections, training, and recordkeeping.
Capability of working independently and as a team member to develop and implement programs with EHS staff and MSK departments.
Ability to act decisively when responding to emergency situations.
Demonstrated leadership in developing and managing position requirements including the ability to supervise and motivate staff and develop performance measures to maximize productivity and work quality.
A high service orientation with good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills including the ability to develop and deliver concise documentation, presentations and trainings. Ability to organize and lead effective meetings.
Competency in the use of computers including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and email internet programs. Ability to develop complex MS Excel spreadsheets to track and organize multiple operational activities including the integration of multiple data sources; use of statistical calculations and formulas; and develop operational reports.
Already have, or eligibility to obtain, a nationally recognized professional certification in the safety or environmental fields (ie: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), or other) is preferable.
