The Merchandise and Shipping/Receiving Manager in the Brown University Bookstore is responsible for all merchandise selection, pricing and presentation. The merchandise manager will also determine vendor selection and negotiate best costing, payment terms and marketing support. This position is responsible for growing sales and gross margin dollars while fully serving the needs of students, staff, alumni, campus visitors and the greater College Hill neighborhood. Managing all aspects of the Bookstoreâ??s shipping and receiving function assuring an efficient and accurate operation is a major focus of this position.
Buying and merchandising these lines requires the following common functions:
With complete discretion and full accountability for almost a million dollars in Bookstore sales, select and work with vendors to purchase high quality desirable merchandise that reflects well on the Brown Bookstore and Brown University and serves the needs of Faculty, staff, students and the general public..
Develop and maintain a high level of industry/ product knowledge such as sales trends, new product innovation , seasonal changes etc. that allow the Bookstore to offer a product mix that serves all components of our customer base and is timely and appealing.
Demonstrate a firm grasp of all business metrics and utilize these skills and consistent review of reporting options to develop plans and strategies that maximize sales.
Develop, and communicate to the Replenishment Manager, presentation plans that are visually appealing and that maximize the sales of the merchandise.
Based on sales projections and vendor lead times, maintain inventory levels that maximize turns while maintaining the presentation plans.
Monitor sales trends and adjust purchasing plans accordingly.
Supervise the Bookstoreâ??s receipt of merchandise and supplies.
Serve as a active productive member of the Bookstoreâ??s management team
Proven management skills â?? preferably three or more years of management experience
Ability to direct multiple functions and projects simultaneously.
Buyer experience required
Merchandising experience preferred
Some shipping and receiving experience preferred
Computer skills and aptitude required
