The University of Washington's Division of Medical Oncology's includes 41 faculty members located at the UW Medical Center, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. Over the past 25 years, members of the Division have developed the world's leading bone marrow transplant program. In addition, members of the Division have made substantial contributions to many other areas of cancer treatment, including the use of tumor vaccines, cellular therapy for cancer, antibody-based treatments, and novel forms of chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. The Breast Research Oncology team has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 3. This individual will be responsible for performing professional work in support of scientific research; perform a variety of complex investigative procedures; modify procedures and interpret results for the Breast Research Oncology team.
Under general supervision of Principal Investigator, will assist in determining the most suitable methods to be used in research; independently perform scientific investigative procedures requiring application of professional judgment; interpret results and determine whether they are consistent with experimental goals; review literature; modify experimental procedure or technique to obtain optimal experimental results; assist in the assembly, organization and interpretation of data.
Provide day-to-day management of the Gadi Laboratory and assist PI with translational clinical research. Interacts in a collaborative manner with lab members to accomplish goals
Organize and lead efforts for the management and flow of clinical specimens of students and post docs in the lab to ensure they are properly processing and executing experiments according to protocol.
Provide guidance for establishing cell lines, genomically sequencing and expression analysis
Provide independent and collaborative support for functional genetic screens of the patient derived tumor cultures.
Perform chemical and drug screens that will be used to validate targets identified using the pan- genomic approach.
Oversee regulatory affairs coordination as outlined by protocol objectives for the laboratory
Assist in the development of grant and manuscript administration, including prime and subcontract scope of work.
Oversee and supervise students and post docs in the laboratory; monitoring the work of the staff to ensure correct procedures are being followed; will provide direction to ensure completion of technical tasks and projects

Project Planning and Management:
Participates in strategic planning (understanding markets, state-of-the-art); plays a lead role in the acquisition of research funding; identifies sources of new project funding and directs the preparation of proposals and presentations. Is responsible for maintaining positive relationships with major customers/grant sponsors/investigators of external research and development contract funding.
Successfully manages multiple or significant projects, tasks or teams which may require the use of sophisticated project planning techniques; may evaluate proposed or ongoing projects; interfaces with customer/grant sponsor project managers and UW research/engineering management for existing or proposed projects.
Provides ideas to improve organizational efficiency at group and department levels; identifies and evaluates recruits for open positions; mentors junior staff in development of technical, project and business development skills; monitors the work of others and redirects efforts to achieve task/project objectives or enhance quality.
Position has full supervisory responsibility for staff; hires, trains, conducts performance evaluations, and works with Human Resources to discipline and/or terminate employee(s) when necessary.
Sought out for contributions to reports and publications; has established networks in internal peer group; starts becoming part of identifiable external peer network.

MA degree in Biology or related field, and three or more years of relevant laboratory research experience
Experience with performing cell culture
Sequencing and expression analysis
Experience with regulatory file maintenance (IRB or IUCAC)
Experience with grant preparation
Excellent experience with manuscript preparation
Must be exceptionally organized with attention to detail
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work within a team-oriented environment
Experience using genetic screens, siRNA or CRISPR highly desired
Experience using patient derived cell culture highly desired
