Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Digital Initiatives Web Designer (Graphic Designer III) designs, develops, and maintains digital content and websites for the Digital Initiatives Program. The position forms a core part of the Digital Initiatives team and as such is expected to assist in the development and Implementation of Digital Initiatives collections and projects.
The Digital Initiatives Program, part of the Digital Scholarship and Initiatives Department, is growing in volume of both the type of activities and quantity of content developed.
Reporting to the Digital Initiatives Archivist, the position is responsible for independently creating web interfaces, wire-frames, and content templates and is expected to apply their expertise to identifying and solving technical problems with web design and content display. Additionally, this position is wholly responsible for ensuring compliance with accessibility best practices and Iowa State brand standards.
The Web Designer ensures the aesthetic quality of Digital Initiatives web content, and advises on aesthetics and graphic design for the unit. The position is also responsible for collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to design and Implement digital scholarship projects and digital exhibits and assists the Library’s Digital Team in the selection of new digital initiatives. The position also serves as the sole expert on web design in the unit and is the unit’s primary liaison with University Information Technology and Web Development.
The Digital Initiatives Web Designer must be able to teach self new technologies, new guidelines, and new web design and development practices. The Digital Initiatives Web Designer must have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate, negotiate, and resolve problems effectively through tact and diplomacy with an array of stakeholders. This position requires analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills and the ability to balance a complex workload while also meeting deadlines in light of administrative priorities. This position requires extensive use of computer screens and being stationary. Must be able to distinguish colors. The Digital Initiatives Web Designer also needs to be adaptable, creative, and responsive, and able to succeed in a project-driven environment with rapidly changing projects and priorities. The Web Designer must possess a strong team orientation, a sincere commitment to the land grant mission and public service, and the ability to work either Independently or collaboratively.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience designing websites, wireframes, interfaces, and/or other web-based digital content.
Experience in designing and deploying content in Drupal.
Experience configuring and managing web settings for CONTENTdm.
Experience in an archives setting (processing, reference, descriptive work, web design, digitization, etc.)
Experience with digitization projects in a library or archives setting.
Training, coursework, or experience in HTML, XHTML, and/or other markup languages.
Experience, training, or coursework in art and/or graphic design.
Experience, training, or coursework in web accessibility standards.
Experience consulting with faculty, staff, or students on digital scholarship and/or digital exhibit design and implementation.
Experience working in a project-oriented team-based environment.
Demonstrated commitment to or leadership in diversity and inclusion.
