The OR/PACU Nurse Educator is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the educational activities of the Operating Room (OR) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) staff within VA NCHCS. Works collaboratively with management and multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for staff, maintain and enhance clinical competence, and manage ongoing education and competency programs. Time is divided between Sacramento VAMC and Martinez OPC, travel required.

Major duties include, but may not be limited to:
Works collaboratively with unit Nurse Managers to assess, develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for staff, maintains and enhances clinical competence, and manages ongoing education and competency programs.
Serves as a role model and clinical leader to nursing staff for clinical excellence, research, and best practices.
Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams in planning, directing, and implementing a patient-centered environment.
Systematically evaluates and facilitates change in clinical practice/standards of care.
In collaboration with unit Nurse Managers; responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activities to include but not limited to a Peri-operative RN training program.
Ability to convey information to staff at various levels from novice to expert.
Demonstrates familiarity with established policies and procedures and administration of the unit in accordance with the Joint Commission, ASPAN, AORN, other regulatory agencies, and VA policy. Ability to articulate and interpret organizational policies and procedures to the health care team.
Functions as one of the key people in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to peri-operative standards.
Promotes evidence based clinical practice and assist staff and leadership with Quality Management and Performance Improvement programs, including research projects.
Takes initiative and utilizes innovative and creative approaches for changing practice based on performance improvement findings and evidence based practice.
Demonstrates leadership in providing clinical expertise in selecting/supporting new equipment/monitoring devices used within the facility. In collaboration with unit Nurse Managers, provides training and education on all new equipment.
Recent experience in the OR setting in the past 7 years.
Demonstrated competency in the circulating and scrub nurse roles in the OR.
Specialty Certification: Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR), Certified Peri-anesthesia Nurse (CPAN), Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), or Nursing Professional Development (NPD).
MS/Nursing Education or MSN/Education degree from an accredited school of nursing recognized by the VA (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
Current proficiency in Basic Life Support BLS/ACLS through the American Heart Association (Required prior to assuming clinical duties and must remain current ?VHA Directive 11-77)
Demonstrated teaching and clinical leadership ability in the development of creative educational programs, research, performance improvement and staff development
A thorough understanding of adult learning principles and learning methodologies. The ability to employ strategies and techniques that promote a positive learning and practice environment.
Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology and common software programs (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.) and other electronic data and documentation programs.
Experience with preceptor and mentoring techniques and familiarity with online learning applications and simulation technology.
Demonstrated experience in program and project development, management and coordination.
Member of an appropriate professional nursing organization and seeks continuing education and professional development opportunities consistent with the annual learning plan
