The President & CEO of AFP will serve as the chief executive officer of the association, AFP Canada and the AFP Foundations. S/he will lead a highly committed staff and, with the Board of Directors, ensure AFP’s strategic vision and direction is implemented. S/he will serve as the external face of the organization to a wide range of stakeholders and is expected to build strong relationships to advance AFP’s mission and create opportunities for new donor relationships and for deepening existing ones. Stakeholders include Chapter volunteers, donors, peer organizations (Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Association of Healthcare Philanthropy, CFRE International), headquarters staff, strategic partners, sponsors and vendors.
With the Chair of the Board of Directors, the President & CEO will support the board’s duties as a governance body of the Association.
S/he will be a strong developer of people, and will optimize the organizational structure to ensure that Chapters and members receive excellent customer service.
There is an increasing need for this individual to represent AFP in international government and legislative entities in North America and beyond to advocate for issues related to philanthropy.
The successful candidate will bring proven leadership in multifaceted organizations that include a chapter or affiliate structure, membership, and significant educational programs as a vehicle for professional development. Ideally, the President & CEO will bring a global perspective to allow AFP to advance fundraising and philanthropy.
Major Objectives Critical Success Factors in first 12 to 18 months:
Develop a plan for alternative and sustainable and diversified revenue streams to enhance and support the mission of AFP.
Assess the organizational structure so that it reflects the operational needs of the Association, the Foundations, and the Chapters and ensures alignment and effectiveness.
Manage staff to execute strategic objectives.
Serve AFP’s mission.
Oversee educational offerings, including the annual international conference, to ensure that learning opportunities are relevant to all levels of members and attendees.
Execution of strategic plan, in alignment with AFP’s present and long?term vision, inclusive of clear milestones and performance goals, and fiscal discipline.
Develop of strong, collaborative relationships with the Board and Chapter Leaders.
Work to effectively connect AFP with key stakeholders for better transparency.
Responsibilities The President & CEO will have the following primary responsibilities:
Implement new strategic plan with the Board of Directors to advance the organization and meet the needs of the members.
Annually recommend and update association goals consistent with the strategic plan for approval by the Executive Committee and Board.
Provide the Board regular communication on the financial well being of AFP and the status of plans, programs, initiatives, services and other issues.
Maintain open communication and cooperation between the Board and all levels of staff, and foster high levels of respect and trust between all parties.
Lead, manage, coach and support the senior management team staff.
Serve as the external face of AFP to a variety of constituents, including volunteers, chapters, members,donors and appropriate government entities.
Provide oversight for the Foundations and play an active role to create opportunities for high?level donor engagement and support.
Provide guidance to the Board of Directors, and committee leadership on policy matters and other issues as appropriate.
Work collaboratively with the AFP team to continually elevate the AFP brand.
Work closely with Chapters to ensure AFP offers and communicates a strong, competitive value proposition to members. Continually assess AFP’s value proposition and make recommendations to the Board for new programs and services.
Interact with members and Chapter leaders regularly to capture their needs, maximize engagement and ensure membership satisfaction.
Develop strategies to attract and engage the next generation of fundraisers.
ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC POLICY
Act as primary spokesperson and advocate for AFP regionally and globally.
In collaboration with Chapters, offer a strong local and regional voice for the profession.
Promote a shared and collective vision with Chapters and AFP that is mutually beneficial.
Maintain effective public policy and relations.
Strongly and positively represent and promote AFP and the fundraising profession holistically.
Continue to position AFP as a leader in the coalition of organizations lobbying in support of the sector.
Qualifications The following qualifications are desired for the President & CEO:
Minimum of eight to fifteen years of senior?level leadership experience in a multifaceted, chapter?based organization such as a national association or federated organization.
Recognized success in providing leadership to an organization at the senior management level with a strong history of exceeding established goals and objectives.
Skilled in communicating and advancing the organizational vision and mission to current members,prospective members, community leaders and the public.
Commitment to ethics; evidence of leadership and professional practice that honors accountability,competency, courage, trustworthiness, integrity and transparency.
Excellent fiscal responsibility, financial management skills and experience in budget analysis, forecasting,and planning, including developing and controlling budgets, forecasting and cost control.
Demonstrated management background in recruiting, selecting, training, mentoring, supervising and evaluating executive staff.
Ability to secure philanthropic support and revenue that includes major gifts, individual giving,membership, conference and event revenues and corporate sponsorship.
Experience working with boards and other volunteer leaders to set an organization’s strategic direction.
Open, collaborative and transparent leadership style known for strategic thinking, innovation, high integrity, and political astuteness.
Ability to think creatively about collaborations that could strengthen AFP’s position and service areas going forward in cost?effective ways.
Superb communication skills, including strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Enthusiastic commitment to philanthropy and a passion to expand its impact.
Ability to travel and attend Chapter events and activities.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required; an advanced degree would be an advantage.
Experience in a global setting would be an advantage.
Comfort with current technology would be advantageous.
