The Occupational Therapist II will be responsible for: Conducting comprehensive assessment of patient’s sensory-motor profile as foundation for identifying multiple control sites and related tools for access to augmentative communication tools.Collaborating with ACP speech-language pathologists regarding control site identification, training and related mounting accommodations.Being familiar with current developments/new equipment in the AAC/AT world including new alternative access and mounting tools, new features on manual and power wheelchairs, as well as options for integrated access to power mobility and augmented communication.Ongoing collaboration with each patient, the patient’s family or care provider, their local professional-educational team, funding agency, equipment suppliers and all related team members.Collaborating with Wheelchair Clinic staff and local therapists/equipment vendors to configure each patient’s seating for augmented communication.Participating in weekly staff meetings with all ACP clinicians as well as participation in new equipment training and assessment of pre-market beta tools placed by manufacturers and developers
A Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy.Current certification by the National Board of Certified Occupational Therapy and state licensure as an Occupational Therapist.A solid overview and understanding of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) principles and respective roles of no tech, low tech and high tech options.A working knowledge of AAC and AT principles, technologies, tools.A working knowledge of alternative access tools including computer inputs, switches, head tracking, joystick and eye tracking access.A working knowledge of built in accessibility features on mass market technologies (i.e. Windows and Apple computers, tablets and smartphones) and dedicated AAC devices.Familiarity with seating-positioning accommodations designed to minimize adverse effects of abnormal tone and knowledge of mass market and specialty mounts designed to provide secure, accessible placement of AAC devices, smartphones, communication displays and switches.Strong interpersonal skills, good problem solving skills, a strong sense of teamwork and creativity.Boston Children’s Hospital is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action Employer.
