Advertised Summary Job Description: The Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons (P&S) seeks a proven leader to direct our Center for Education Research & Evaluation (CERE). CERE is home to six experts in various aspects of education, each with advanced degrees, and an expert in data analysis, management and reporting. Reporting to the Vice Dean for Education, the Director will oversee the activities of this consultative group to fulfill commitments to a diverse group of clients. Clients include the faculty and students of P&S; graduate medical education programs of the New York Presbyterian Hospital (GME-NYPH) on both the Columbia and Cornell campuses; the College of Dental Medicine (CDM); the Apgar Academy of Medical Educators; the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (CTSA); and the Mary and Michael Jaharis Simulation Center. Commitments include advising students in study and learning strategies and test preparation; consulting with course directors on program evaluation, learner assessment and instructional design; mentoring students, residents and faculty in educational research and scholarship; providing educator development; and assisting administrators to gather, analyze, and interpret various forms of data in support of the above activities. A faculty appointment may be possible for eligible candidates.
Responsibilities -Guide and support consulting services for P&S students including time management, study and test-taking strategies. -Lead ongoing efforts to design and improve systems in the clients noted above related to program evaluation, learner assessment and instructional design based on state-of-the art methods to promote innovation and excellence. -Work closely with the P&S Office of Medical Education to ensure effective and efficient maintenance of ongoing systems in program evaluation, learner assessment, and instructional design. -Coordinate, prioritize and participate in mentoring students, residents, fellows and faculty in educational research and scholarship, including study design, analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and disseminating results. -Lead CERE's educator development initiatives, in coordination with leadership of the clients noted above, to assist instructors in writing effective learning objectives; developing and utilizing useful, reliable and valid teaching and assessment tools; and analyzing and reporting results that provide evidence of learning. -Manage CERE's commitments to external grants and contracts (e.g., evaluate HRSA-funded diversity pipeline programs, NIH training grants and the institution's Clinical and Translational Science Award). -Lead the work of CERE to collect, manage, analyze, and interpret data in support of all relevant clients, including design of surveys, storage of data in relational databases and reporting of data in user-friendly formats. -Participate in P&S, CDM and GME-NYPH governance committees, including serving as co-chair of the P&S Evaluation Subcommittee. -Prepare data sets, reports and other materials in support of institutional accreditation, including for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Dental Accreditation, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and Society of Simulation in Healthcare. -Liaise with Medical Center Information Technology to support efforts related to curriculum administration and management and the delivery of student services. -Manage CERE operations, including budgeting; supervising and hiring staff; completing performance evaluations; supporting career growth; and maintaining a team-oriented culture. -Advance the field of health sciences education by active engagement in communities of practice at the local, regional and national levels, including the Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education. -Other duties as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: Required a PhD or EdD in health sciences education, instructional design, cognitive psychology, educational psychology, educational measurement, statistics, psychology, or a related field, or equivalent in education and experience plus (7) seven years of experience in health sciences education with direct involvement in instructional design, program evaluation, learner assessment, faculty development, and management of complex data. -At least (3) three years in a leadership and/or supervisory role. -Knowledge of competency-based education, program evaluation, learner assessment, and instructional design. -An established history of research, scholarship, and publication. -Evidence of a national/international reputation, including active participation in relevant professional societies, with evidence of leadership roles in those societies being preferable. -Leadership skills, including visioning, strategic planning, employee motivation, performance appraisal, and conflict resolution. -Management and organizational skills, including staff supervision, managing multiple projects simultaneously for different stakeholders, and time management to prioritize and meet project deadlines. -Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills (both oral and written), and team-building skills. -Ability to mentor health professions students, residents, faculty, fellows, and faculty in all aspects of education, including instructional design, program evaluation, learner assessment, research, and educational scholarship. -Strong understanding of statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS), relational database software (e.g., Access), and survey software (e.g., Qualtrics, Survey Monkey). -Strong skills in office productivity tools including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications: -Experience specifically in medical education at both the undergraduate and graduate level. -Experience working with multiple schools, institutes, and programs in a university or academic medical center environment. -Basic financial management skills. -Experience developing and managing budgets.
