Information and Technology Services provides technology and communications services in support of U-M Ann Arbor's academic and research needs. ITS also manages the administrative computing systems and executes the IT security strategy for the Ann Arbor campus, Michigan Medicine and two regional campuses, Flint and Dearborn. Information and Technology Services (ITS) has an immediate opening for an Accounting Senior in our Finance area. The main responsibilities of the position will include:
Preparing and consolidating statements and various other accounting statements and reports taking into consideration policies, industry standards, procedures and requirements for assigned areas.
Creating and monitoring budgets.
Analyzing financial reports and records comparing to budgets and making recommendations relative to the accounting reserves, assets and expenditures.
Reviewing and verifying the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications assigned to various records.
Creating both standard and ad hoc reports showing expenses, inventories and budget balances.
Maintaining records of actual operating figures.
Opening, closing and modifying chartfields, providing oversight for account reconciliations, investigating discrepancies and initiating corrections, managing and tracking department inventories, vendor payments, vendor contracts, etc..
Performing analytical studies and conversion of data into concise understandable reports.
ITS Administration Mission Statement:

Develop, review, monitor and analyze budgets, create and update forecasts and performance reports.
Build complex models to support 5-year outlooks, trends and analysis in the support of new services for the purpose of projecting and accounting for expected financial outcomes.
Review and approve University internal recharge rates to ensure compliance with A-21 and University policy. Participate in the comprehensive recharge rate review process for the purpose of accounting and billing of services.
Collaborate with management to create monthly reports that are transparent and that provide a path for decision making.
Understand, utilize and develop customized reports and use of tools that are available in the department and at the university.
Monitor business transactions for accuracy and appropriateness of revenue/expenditures, including staffing plan statistics, non-salary expense data, expenditures, inventory, assets, etc., investigate and resolve financial discrepancies.
Develop partnerships and consultations with the management teams of each department in an effort to increase the business and operational understanding that allows for sound recommendations relative to accounting and financial matters of services being provided.
Conduct special studies or recommendations relative to the accounting of reserves, assets and expenditures.
Have a firm understanding and application of current policies, industry standards, procedures and requirements and University Standard Practice Guides (SPGs).
Reviews monthly financial transaction reports and assess any issues in accordance with current written procedures. Initiates corrections or adjustments of financial transactions, as appropriate. Submits corrections with required approval and communicates directly to management any material findings during course of review. Verifies proper financial controls are incorporated into routine financial processes.
Analyze financial performance of assigned areas and summarize findings to management in accurate and timely internal reports. Create ad hoc reports and reports for management, as requested.
Review/monitor account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies and initiate corrections. Develop business cases to support financial requests or service changes/improvements. Prepare narrative documents, clearly outlining the approach, analysis, assumptions and conclusions for the business case. Provide scenarios/options and recommend a plan of action based on the business case conclusions.
Maintains and updates standing monthly forecast reports for operating and project budgets. Ensures the integrity and accuracy of monthly reports.
Monitors operations for compliance with internal procedures and policies. Assists in completion of internal control certifications including creating business processes to ensure compliance. Assists in monthly and fiscal year end closing and the annual budget process.
Complete gap analysis and perform random audits.

A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance or a related field with a thorough understanding of accounting and financial principles.
Five (5) or more years of progressive experience as an accountant, financial or business analyst, budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis, including some experience with fund accounting or related experience.
Strong knowledge and understanding of how to develop business charters and business cases.
Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work with a variety of individuals and units.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in analysis.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and collaboration applications.
Demonstrated experience/ability to:
Develop complex financial models and analyze complex data.
