: We are seeking a Physicist with an interest in experimental measurements of dynamic material properties at extreme conditions\. Opportunities exist to work both as a team leader and principal investigator as well as a key member of a team doing research at the cutting edge of the application of high energy density physics\. In addition, extensive opportunities exist to collaborate with internal and external scientists on research in the broad areas of dynamic material properties and high energy density science\. Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to: + Designing and executing experiments on the Z facility and other supporting facilities, analyzing existing data, and designing and implementing new diagnostic systems+ Applying existing capabilities, developing new capabilities, and developing and fielding novel diagnostics as required to make important materials properties measurements Required: + PhD in a physical sciences or engineering field+ Technical competency in one or more of the following areas as demonstrated through publications in refereed journals: experimental physics, material science, solid mechanics, shock physics, high energy density physics, or advanced diagnostics+ Experience with dynamic material or solid mechanics experimentation and analysis techniques+ Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and in technical and project presentations and a strong interest in publishing peer reviewed articles in premier journals Desired: + Background in one or more of the following: shock physics, high energy density physics, equations of state, warm dense matter, inertial confinement fusion, or constitutive properties+ Demonstrated ability to work creatively on a difficult and complex research problem+ Candidates for this position should possess the ability and desire to work in a collaborative team environment on large\-scale multi\-year scientific projects as part of a fast\-paced technically challenging research organization+ Experience using x\-ray diffraction as a material structure diagnostic tool+ Experience using numerical simulation tools+ Experience with high\-speed diagnostic instrumentation \(VISAR, PDV, streak and/or framing cameras, digitizers, flash x\-rays, etc\.\)+ Experience with gas guns, lasers, or pulsed power systems for high\-pressure experimentation+ Evidence of careful, systematic, and thorough approach to planning experiments+ Ability to obtain a DoE security clearance Department Description: The Dynamic Materials Properties Department at Sandia National Laboratories \(Department 1646\) performs experimental measurements of dynamic material properties at high pressures, including material's equations of state, phase boundaries, and constitutive properties\. Experiments are performed with a variety of drivers, from high velocity gas guns to the most powerful pulsed\-power facility in the world, the 26 million ampere Z facility\. The focus of the department is dynamic material properties experiments using both high\-pressure shock waves and shockless compression\. A particularly exciting area of emerging interest is the study of material properties in regions of phase space that are both off\-Hugoniot and off the principal isentrope\. The department is responsible for designing, executing, diagnosing, and analyzing dynamic materials properties experiments on the Z facility, and at Sandia National Laboratories' Dynamic Integrated Compression Experimental \(DICE\) and Shock Thermodynamic Applied Research \(STAR\) facilities\.
