The Student Success Coach (SSC) works directly with students to support their development, resilience, and academic success, both in the classroom and out. As an integral part of college efforts to improve retention, persistence, and graduation rates, SSCs work across departments to bring instruction and co-curricular learning into alignment. Under the leadership of the Dean of Academic Support, SSCs are primarily advisors, helping students plan their academic program, take advantage of support resources and opportunities for co-curricular work with Academic Affairs, the Wellness Center, Residence Life, the Collaborative Learning Center, Information Services, the Office of Career Services, Business Office, Financial Aid and other student services to serve as a single point of contact for everything a student at Unity needs. They connect with students both in the classroom, as instructors of foundational courses, and through their work in other areas of campus life.
The focus and expertise of the Literacy SSC is on building student capacity in writing, communication, and information literacy. The Information Literacy SSC teaches in the Composition and Communication course sequence, delivers sections of Communication Studio, provides training for peer tutors in writing and oral communication, and provides information literacy support to students in coordination with the library. Specific duties include (but are not all inclusive):
* Advises 20-40 Unity College students
* Teaches up to 12 credits of Composition and Communication I and II, Unity Experience, or Unity Transfer Experience per year.
* Provides one-on-one academic mentoring for a varying caseload of academically at-risk students as assigned.
* Effectively presents information and responds to questions from students, parents, and college employees.
* Assists students and resolves problems in a variety of complex situations and dynamics.
* Works flexibly across the institution to enlist support in response to student needs.
The successful candidate will have a Master's degree preferred in Information Literacy and / or written instruction plus 1 - 3 years' experience working with college-age students in a teaching or counseling capacity in a higher education setting. Must have basic crisis intervention skills or ability to learn (self-harm, sexual assault, substance abuse, etc.) Preferred experience in professional advising, training, and workshop development. Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.
This is a full-time, year round position that works primarily day shift with weekends and extended hours as needed. May sometimes include participation in college events, student activities and events, ceremonies, and outdoor activities. Must be flexible in meeting the college needs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly active and required to run, stand for extended periods of time, lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Is regularly required to sit, talk or hear, and use the telephone for internal and external communications. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
