Webster University seeks an experienced, collaborative and entrepreneurial leader to serve as Director of Study Abroad at Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri. This is an exciting opportunity to provide strategic direction and leadership to a recognized study abroad program and to work collaboratively with colleagues across Webster’s unique global network of campuses and partners to increase and strengthen global mobility opportunities for students.
Webster University has international campuses in Europe, Asia and Africa where students from around the world study for a semester – or for their full degree. Webster’s strategic plan, Global Impact for the Next Century, seeks to increase the opportunities for students to have transformative international experiences. The Director of Study Abroad will be a key team member in creating and delivering programs for new student populations; developing and implementing business plans for effective recruitment, delivery, and evaluation of study abroad programs; championing study abroad among faculty, staff and administration; and working with colleagues across the Webster network to achieve strategic goals related to student mobility.
The Director of Study Abroad reports to the Vice Provost and is a member of the leadership team of the Office of Academic Affairs. The Director works closely with Webster’s five schools and colleges, the academic and administrative staff of Webster’s international campuses, the directors of WINS (Webster International Network of Schools) and Global Program Development, and the Office of Finance & Administration.
Develop and implement strategies to increase student global mobility, including metrics for success and assessment plans, in alignment with the University’s strategic plan
Lead the development and delivery of a communications and student recruitment plan for study abroad at the main campus in St. Louis and at Webster’s international campuses; engage faculty, deans, and staff in promoting study abroad as a valuable, high-impact practice
Facilitate collaboration and communication among Webster’s international campus study abroad staff; provide support and resources to strengthen and improve study abroad experiences across Webster campuses and international partners
Collaborate with deans and faculty to ensure study abroad programs are of high academic quality, financially viable, and of value to students in multiple majors
Lead the development and review of policy, processes and systems to improve study abroad experiences
Plan and manage the budget for the Office of Study Abroad, including setting projections, review of financial models, and long-range planning
Oversee crisis communication and risk management for study abroad, in collaboration with Global Marketing & Communications and risk management staff; serve as first responder to students, staff and faculty in emergency incidents abroad; implement crisis management plans as necessary and provide briefings to University leadership
Provide leadership and professional development for study abroad advisors and support staff; carry an advising load and model effective student outreach
Represent Webster University and the Office of Study Abroad at internal events (including audiences with prospective and new students, parents, faculty, and alumni) and external conferences and events
Other duties as assigned
Master’s Degree and at least 5 years of progressively responsible managerial experience in study abroad administration or a related area
Understanding of study abroad scholarship, practices and models
Demonstrated ability to initiate, implement, and assess projects, including financial modeling and recruitment strategies
Proven ability to supervise and develop professional staff and to lead a team to set and achieve goals and prioritize activities
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including skills in presenting to a variety of audiences and in writing briefings and proposals
Strong cultural awareness and intercultural communication skills
Ability to interact with and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including students, parents, faculty, administrators, and international partners
Knowledge of risk management and crisis communication, response and management in study abroad
Knowledge of study abroad rules, regulations and best practices and experience in developing and operationalizing policies and processes
Ability to develop and manage budgets
Commitment to diversity of study abroad students and experiences and to accessibility
Ability and willingness to travel
Ability in a foreign language is preferred
