Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The work of this position interacts with the entire University community, State and Town officials, Architects, Engineers, General Contractors, Construction Managers and others who are retained by the University to design and construct Capital Projects. Communication with senior university leadership, including Deans and Vice Chancellors, is required for adequate planning, programming and completion of the design and construction activities. Position is responsible for clearly and accurately communicating with designers during the selection process, during programming to direct the designer regarding the programmatic needs of the University, project budget and schedules and for ensuring that designers maintain the scope, budgets and schedules. Position is similarly responsible for communications with the general contractor or the construction manager to establish clear expectations of the project delivery, which may be pre-design and through warranty and Measurement and Verification services. The work of this position requires that the individual facilitate development of a project scope that meets the budget and user needs; present project updates through written reports and verbal communication; read and interpret complex construction drawings and specifications; help customers or clients understand contract documents; manage the design review process for each project; coordinate with on campus staff for complete and timely integration of utilities, shutdowns, miscellaneous other related work; build and maintain long term partnerships and relationships that foster teamwork; adapt communications as appropriate for specific audiences; mediates conflict resolution in a professional manner and in the best interest of the University.
Individual must possess a bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university, and be a registered architect or professional engineer in the State of North Carolina or be able to obtain within a year of employment.
5 years of directly related experience preferably in a Campus or University setting.
Individual must have experience with design and construction of buildings, infrastructure, and site improvements, and have knowledge of construction contracting and contract law.
In addition, knowledge of North Carolina State Construction Office and Department of Insurance policies is desired.
