The Department of Surgery currently has an outstanding opportunity for a WISH LAB OPERATIONS MANAGER.
The Lab Operations Manger for the WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH) program is responsible for the operational coordination of the WISH simulation labs. This position reports to the Administrator for WISH with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Executive Director of WISH. WISH is a multi-disciplinary School of Medicine initiative and exists to provide cognitive and skills training and assessment for residents, medical students, faculty, and the larger medical community. This position will manage labs at both UWMC and HMC facilities, but will be primarily located at HMC.
Under the general direction of the WISH Administrator, the individual in this position organizes and oversees the operations of the WISH simulation labs and provides support to WISH research projects. This is a multi-faceted, fast-paced and high volume position. The position requires a self-starter, expert time manager, and an individual comfortable with a range of different projects and operational tasks and the ability to prioritize with ease and accuracy.
The individual will supervise lab technicians at both labs. They will be involved in their hiring, training and supervision on a day-to-day basis. They are responsible for seeing that the labs are appropriately staffed at all times and ensures all lab tasks are completed by the lab techs in a timely and accurate manner. In concert with Administrator, this individual will participate in performance evaluations and any performance management issues that may arise.
They must be able to accomplish lab management with minimal guidance from the Administrator and/or Executive Director.
The individual in this position will provide assistance and support to WISH research activities. Simulation activities must be validated and new simulators created, trialed and implemented. Assuring smooth operations around these activities is an important component of this position.
The individual in this position must be dedicated to superior service to internal and external customers and must have the full confidence and trust of WISH faculty, WISH Directors and the Administrator in their role as the manager of the lab operations. The individual must be able to successfully interface between the educational and research aspects of the program as well as any clinical aspects that may arise.
The major aspects of this position fall into the following two categories:
Management of WISH Simulation Lab and Operations: 70% Operation of Research Studies: 30%
Success in this position will be recognized when program activities are in alignment with the goals and objectives of the WISH mission and the programmatic details of WISH are expertly executed.
I. Management of WISH Simulation Lab and Operations: 70%:
A significant portion of the WISH program is its teaching mission. The expanding program reaches across the WWAMI region to train residents, medical students, allied health professionals, and practicing physicians. The individual in this position organize, oversee, and assist with the simulation lab operations. This competency is demonstrated by:
Overseeing/guiding lab technicians in the preparation for training sessions, including the timely, accurate and complete set up and take down of equipment/labs for WISH classes;
Overseeing and/or running simulation scenarios;
Providing curriculum and equipment overview to faculty; providing guidance and acting as a resource during all parts of the simulation exercises, as necessary.
Assuring Lab equipment is ready and functional at all times. 1) Overseeing lab tech use; 2)training lab techs on equipment;
Managing the extensive and expensive inventory; assuring appropriate stock of lab supplies;
Assuring laboratory is a safe, clean, learning environment; assuring appropriate training of Lab techs and others in safety procedures within the Lab
Managing Laboratory Staff:
With Administrator and Executive Director, determining staffing model and initiating hiring WISH lab staff;
Ensuring and providing initial and on-going training of lab staff; providing lab staff with tools and opportunities to continue professional development as required;
Supervising WISH lab technicians, including setting job duties and in concert with administrator, conducting performance evaluations; working with administrator to resolve any performance issues that may arise.
Providing technical support for WISH faculty; partnering with them to ensure simulation scenarios and materials are current, in the established WISH format and relevant to the training;
Developing, implementing and interpreting simulation lab policies, procedures, and practices;
Develop training methods and training for individuals operating simulators, using a combination of didactic as well as hands-on training.
Assisting with Development & Public Relations:
Teaming with WISH management, faculty, and other stakeholders to achieve annual goals and outcomes related to WISH (e.g., provide data and support for credentialing bodies);
Assisting with Development and Alumni relations activities;
II. Research Study Operations: 30%:
Research and Development activities are core to the mission of WISH. Simulation activities must be validated and new simulators created, trialed and implemented. Assuring smooth operations around these activities is an important component of this position. The competency is demonstrated by:
Participating as active, contributing member of the WISH Research and Development team;
Working with the team to plan research projects; using appropriate research and project management techniques to carry out designated parts of research;
Assisting with all aspects of assigned research proposals and projects, including: Grant proposal development, IRB Applications, Defining research problems and protocols, Data collection, Data analysis, Literature reviews, and Research publications and manuscript production;
Collaborating with outside vendors on research projects;
Participating in professional and educational activities that enhance current knowledge base;
Bachelor's degree or higher in a life-sciences, computer technology, or similar field AND three to five years of experience in simulation research, management or similar.
Supervisory or lead experience;
Understanding of medical terminology, procedures, techniques;
Organized, able to set priorities;
Great attention to detail and follow-through on assignments;
Must be able to work irregular hours at times (some early mornings, some nights and weekends);
Must be able to travel to various UW WISH sites.
Graduate degree in life-sciences;
Experience working in a medical setting;
Depth of understanding and profound interest in simulation training;
Ability to run Human Patient Simulator and other simulators.
