Job Description:JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The Director of Laboratory Operations (DLO) leads and manages the CET laboratory facilities related to the delivery of instruction and research. The Director is expected to demonstrate a high level of professional behavior and maintain a positive professional relationship with all laboratory stakeholders including, students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external individuals and groups. In addition, the Director is expected to: A. Supervise CET Lab Supervisors, conduct annual evaluations, set expectations for performance, manage coverage of CET lab sections, and support professional training and development of Lab Supervisors. B. Lead CET planning to define, design, and implement the use of CET laboratory space and equipment. C. Serve as a member of the CET Leadership Team. Participate in strategic planning and day-to-day management of the College operations. D. Manage the Laboratory Operating Budget and prioritize purchases based on demonstrated need. The DLO is the project manager for new lab equipment, which includes: researching product and vendors, obtaining quotes, initiating bids, finalizing equipment purchases, and completing all facets of installation. Installation includes the defining of space needs, designing the lab renovation, and then managing all aspects of implementing the CET space renovation to accommodate the equipment. The DLO will be the administrator for purchasing equipment and supplies using funds allocated to the College for the laboratories, such as the Ed-Tech funds, One-Time Funds and other funds allocated by the Dean for laboratory needs. E. Develop and implement the CET safety program. Create safety programs that are in compliance with appropriate regulations and policies. Ensure that all faculty and students have been appropriately trained in safe practices. Ensure that there is an environment and culture of safe behavior in the labs. F. Administer CET LAB website. G. Seek feedback from faculty, department chairs, students and staff to promote continuous quality improvement in CET's laboratory operations. H. Ensure CET laboratories are in an effective operational condition to support course expectations and outcomes. This will include, but not be limited to: (1) purchasing, installing, and maintaining lab equipment, (2) having responsibility for all CET lab equipment warranties and preventative maintenance overhead expense (3) purchasing supplies and tools, (4) tracking inventory of all equipment, tools, and expendable supplies, (5) oversee the regular cleaning of CET labs, and ensure that the disposing of materials will follow University policies and procedures, and chemical(s) disposition will follow the guidelines of the ECU Environmental Health and Safety Department (6) and other items assigned by the dean and in compliance with University policies and procedures. I. Interact with CET departments and other colleges within the university to support effective delivery of lab instruction, which may include, but is not limited to: (1) entering work orders to install software, (2) rearranging laboratories, (3) fabricating special items needed for the lab, (4) making modifications to lab equipment, (5) installing or repairing lab equipment, and (5) any other preparation to ensure the lab is ready for each lab session for students to complete the planned laboratory experiences in a safe and academically sound manner. J. The Director submits to the One Card Office all students to be granted access to laboratory facilities. Note that the Director of Laboratory Operations and Laboratory Supervisors do not serve as a Faculty of Record for any class or laboratory in the code unit, do not develop student learning outcomes, instructional materials, or lesson plans for classes, and do not assign final grades to students.
Miniumum Qualifications: MS in a Technology, Engineering or Science related field, Safety Certifications, and at least 5 years of experience supervising a laboratory and/or business.
