Job Description:The Vice Chancellor for Research, Economic Development, and Engagement (REDE) is responsible for providing vision, strategic direction, and oversight for activities related to the promotion of research and research administration; engagement, innovation, and economic development; and centers and institutes. The Vice Chancellor represents the campus in the aforementioned matters to the Chancellor, the University of North Carolina, and external stakeholders such as government agencies, private foundations, national organizations, industry, and regional communities. This leader is charged with providing the vision and strategic planning necessary to develop and enhance the quality and visibility of the University's research and academic programs, as well as integrating these programs into economic development. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for REDE is a member of the Executive Council and also joins the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, and the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to form the Academic Council. The Vice Chancellor for REDE will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in scholarship, support of shared governance, and an established record of effectiveness as a leader beyond the divisional level with experience in strategic planning, budgetary management, administrative processes, and staff development. Among the most important responsibilities is the supervision and leadership for sponsored research and creative activities (pre and post award services), research compliance, regulatory review committees, and interdisciplinary research programs. The Vice Chancellor will manage an effective faculty start-up program that incorporates strategic priorities and accountability among recipients and their units, while also fostering faculty development through funding of intramural grants, seed monies for research-related activities, and through research and creative activities awards for faculty recognition. Direct reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research, Economic Development, and Engagement are: the Divisional Office, Office of Grants & Contracts, Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research Integrity and Compliance, Office of Research Development, Office of Innovation & Economic Development, Office of Public Service and Community Relations, Office of Undergraduate Research, University and Medical Center Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care, and Use Committee.
Miniumum Qualifications: The new Vice Chancellor will have a record of distinction in scholarship sufficient for appointment as a tenured full professor within one of the University's academic disciplines. An appropriate terminal degree and leadership/senior administrative experience are required.
