The Associate Athletic Director for Major Gifts is responsible for the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts and to provide supervision and direction for fundraising activities and staff.
The Associate Athletic Director will develop a fundraising and engagement plan for donors over $25,000 and will carry a portfolio. Annual performance reviews will be based on written, mutually approved operating plans and metrics developed in partnership with the VP DAR office.
The Associate Athletic Director for Major Gifts will:
Develop and monitor Ram Athletic Fund operational budget
Maintain portfolio of 125-150 major gift & leadership annual donors
Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift prospects for Capital Campaign/Special Projects
Solicit major gifts through appointments, telephone solicitations and coordinated mailings to obtain and/or increase major donor contributions
Oversee specific regional fundraising areas
Coordinate individual sport fundraising for specific sports, as assigned
Oversee three full-time employees and two graduate assistants
Advise staff and administrators of appropriate fund raising strategies to assist them in securing private funding
Provide assistance regarding tax laws, policies and procedures and in resolving problems with university administrators in order to maintain a positive image of Athletics
Recruit, train and manage volunteers to solicit pledges through committees, staff-volunteer solicitations and special functions
Maintain prospect records and contact reports to facilitate repeated donations and establish gift histories
Track metrics for accountability and evaluation
Must have an advanced degree or training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in fundraising, public relations, marketing or a related field, or 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in athletics development or a related field
Demonstrated experience in facilitating leadership annual fund gifts (<$5,000)
Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving
Travel involving automobile
Deep appreciation for the mission and aspirations of VCU Athletics
Desire to play a meaningful role in the life of VCU and to share in the extended community
Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and close personal solicitations, having a demonstrated track record of successful gift solicitations
Professional credibility required to engage and leverage senior leadership, volunteer leadership and other key stakeholders in building a successful campaign and organization
Management skills that are consistent with bringing out the best in staff and instills pride and ownership in a team effort
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
