UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources, and services. , and research computing. The Student Program within UW-IT, supports UW enterprise student applications for registration, admissions, financial aid and more, including overseeing modernization efforts; develops initiatives focused on delivering high value, shorter-term enhancements including the MyPlan online academic planning tool; represents the UW's involvement in Kuali Student, a next-generation student administrative system being developed by a consortium of top-tier universities.
UW-IT's Student Program is currently seeking a Technology Manager to lead product management efforts related to modernizing student information systems (SIS) at the UW.
This position will supervise, mentor and coach staff working in the areas of Business Analysis, User Experience, Functional Testing, Technical Writing, Product Support and Project Management. Project leadership and management for strategic projects in the SIS portfolio; coordinating with other leads and architects on development and adoption of standards and best practices; and coordination with other project leads on issues related to capacity planning and staff assignment to projects.
This position requires a self-starter with excellent organizational, analytical and communications skills to lead cross-functional teams.
This position will contribute to team and staff development in the SIS program, project management, analysis and conceptual system design expertise within a diverse team environment that includes participants from a broad range of campus and administrative units both within the UW and other universities. Technical scope requires working knowledge of Agile and Waterfall software development processes including use and test case development, requirements management, quality assurance processes, system analysis and documentation, and data modeling. In addition, the Technical Manager will be responsible for project management and production system service management for a broad range of core university systems.
Staff management scope requires an ability to grow staff skills, coach and mentor, set clears expectations, and manage performance issues.
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration Information Science, Computer Science or related field.
Five years' experience supervising technical staff and leading or participating within established methodologies involving, business analysis, project management, user experience design, quality assurance/testing, production system support.
Solid communications and interpersonal skills with the ability to speak and write about technical issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Strong analytical skills to evaluate alternate design options and abstract high-level requirements into sound design.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate business decisions.
Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse range of activities in a very visible and pressured environment, exercising independent judgement in resolving problems.
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new techniques, technologies and methodologies.
Excellent organization and collaboration skills.
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Experience working in an Agile software development process.
Experience managing information technology resources in a complex organization.
Experience establishing a mature business process environment around one or more of the following methodologies: Business Analysis, Project Management, User Experience Design, QA/Testing and Production System Support.

While the general working hours are within Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., this individual must be willing to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of his/her colleagues. Events that will occur outside the normal work schedule include, but are not limited to; staff meetings, client consultations, and system modifications. Likewise, this position has regular stringent deadlines revolving around the academic calendar which may require extended work hours.
