The Office of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (OPERS) is the UCSC campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Recreation Department, within OPERS, offers a wide variety of adventure-oriented programs, designed to welcome and engage students of diverse backgrounds and experiences. Annual participation in recreation is nearly 12,000. The Recreation Operations Supervisor oversees a group of related Recreation operations, including reception, vans, volunteering, bike maintenance and slack-lining. Additionally, this position supervises the sea kayaking program.
This position exercises extensive independent decision-making in hiring and supervising student staff, purchasing and monitoring inventory, managing cash handling and credit card processing procedures and managing the sea kayaking outings.
Throughout, this position fosters a welcoming and positive environment by advocating and modeling the UCSC Principles of Community to all student staff and customers.
This position is 60% FTE, 12 months/year with full benefits.
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.
Manages the daily operations for programs such as instructional fitness, aquatics or other recreational activities. Has autonomy to analyze and resolve problems and determine appropriate action. Supervises recreation program leaders/instructors. Provides recommendations for the development of program budgets and typically, oversees implementation and monitoring of budget, inventory and other resources. Makes recommendations for policy changes.
Must possess Adult CPR certification.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Strong knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.
Demonstrated strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally in non-routine situations.
Uses highly developed and creative problem solving skills to deliver and foster a strong service orientation, program management, and sound judgment and decision-making; uses strong critical thinking skills to develop original ideas, in a varied and challenging environment.
