We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Data Analyst.
The Department of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine seeks a Senior Data Analyst to work in close concert with the Director of Metrics and Analytics to develop, improve and maintain an interactive website to track health and health-related metrics at the city level, the City Health Dashboard. The goal of this major initiative is to scale the pilot version of the City Health Dashboard (which currently has data for 4 cities) to become a vital resource for all 500 cities (70,000 population) across the United States. This position will entail extensive review of data at the federal and city levels; evaluating less commonly used data sets for creating novel health metrics; geocoding data; and calculating robust health-related metrics that align with city boundaries.
The analyst should have significant database management and statistical programming skills (SAS or R). A background in small area estimation and spatial statistics is required. Other requisite skills and training include the use of ArcGIS and specifically batch geocoding. Experience using the Spatial Analyst, Networking, and Spatial Clustering toolboxes is an advantage. The employee must have strong organizational skills with the ability to carry out a variety of directed tasks.
- Retrieving and evaluating federal, city, and commercial data for use in the City Health Dashboard with attention to issues of sample size, bias, and timeliness
- Assisting in the development, calculation, and validation of new health metrics
- Geocoding data to municipal boundaries and generating municipal-level estimates of all health metrics, applying smoothing and small area estimation techniques as necessary
- Documenting work flows and methodological challenges involved in generating municipal-level estimates
- Maintaining and updating databases on an ongoing basis; archiving, cataloging, and annotating datasets to build a common library of materials for use by project team members
- Assisting in preparing journal articles, reports, and policy briefs
- Other analytic or research tasks as necessary
- To qualify you must have a masters degree in a quantitative field (biostatistics, health economics)
- 2-3 years experience in an analytics role with database management experience
- Familiarity with commonly used community health metrics
- Skilled in SAS or R statistical software and ArcGIS or QGIS geospatial software
- PhD preferred
- 5 or more years experience preferred in an analytics role with database management experience
- The position is well suited for an applicant with quantitative training in health-related research, including public health, public policy, health economics, and spatial epidemiology
