The Financial Aid Counselor is the primary point of contact for prospective and current students and their families. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, outreach, counseling, processing applications, analysis of award eligibility, file verification, and coordination of aid from various sources including the institution, state and federal governments, and outside sources according to federal, state, and institutional guidelines. This person reports to the Director of Financial Aid, but receives daily direction from the Assistant Director of Financial Aid.
Be knowledgeable about financial aid policies and procedures for all prospective and current Traditional Undergraduate, Professional Studies, and Graduate students and their families.
Provide excellent customer service by answering the telephone, seeing in-person appointments/walk-ins, responding to e-mail inquiries and making financial aid presentations
Assist in ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations and school policies, and communicate them effectively to students and members of the University.
Advise students and their families on all aspects of financial aid
Assist in monitoring and reconciling federal and state aid programs.
Gather and coordinate information from various campus departments to complete the financial aid process.
Identify risks to the organization within the department and discuss risk reduction options with immediate supervisor.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Financial Aid.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience in and understanding of the importance of excellent customer service.
Experience working with the public and ability to professionally represent Vanguard University.
Detail-oriented, accurate, organized and efficient. Ability to work independently, handle large volumes of work, and multi-task with interruptions.
Ability to handle information in a confidential and professional manner.
Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a variety of different groups including students, government agencies, vendors, and offices within the University.
Demonstrated computer proficiency in Microsoft Office. Experience with Ellucian Colleague and other Financial Aid programs such as: COD, NSLDS, WebGrants, EdConnect, IFAP, FAA access to CPS online, Opennet and ELM preferred.
Excellent math, analytical, and data interpretation skills.
Knowledge and acceptance of principles and philosophies of Vanguard University, its programs, and requirements.
