The Family Support Worker in Gads Hill Center’s center-based early childhood programs is responsible for providing comprehensive support to families. Family support workers are expected to develop a relationship with parents and/or guardians beginning during the enrollment process and support parents in setting and achieving ambitious goals and accessing resources to meet their family’s needs. In addition, this position is responsible for achieving all assigned milestones established by the grantee in the health, mental health, family and community partnerships, disabilities and ERSEA. Family Support Workers play a key role in engaging parents in leadership roles and empowering parents as advocates for their families.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct assigned components of enrollment, including entry of accurate data into COPA and family assessment.
- Refer families to resources according to needs and document referrals and progress towards goals and follow up with families regarding referrals on a regular basis.
- Help parents access consistent health care in a “medical home” for their children, and monitor health records in collaboration with the health coordinator.
- Maintain updated and consistent in COPA all family partnership agreements, needs, strengths and referrals, etc.
- Monitor all component data on a regular basis and follow up with families missing documentation on a regular and escalating basis. Use phone calls, home visits and any and all other necessary means to make contact with families, obtain missing items and document all efforts.
- Serve as the liaison between parent committee and other designated staff. Plan, participate and implement in all aspects of monthly parent meetings.
- Participate and assist with the Head Start/Early Head Start self-assessment, site monitor visits, developmental screenings and referrals to Chicago Public Schools or Early Intervention.
- Identify potential community agencies, clinics, dentist’s offices and other resources for partnerships and support establishment of linkage agreements.
- Maintain community resource guide to assist parents in identifying and accessing local community resources.
- Coordinate parent involvement activities through recruitment and organization of events and services.
- In collaboration with partner site staff and parents, ensure involvement in parent policy committees and parent meetings and participate as needed.
- Participate and assist in recruitment and outreach process.
- Conduct classroom/socialization observations to assist mental health providers and education staff with referrals.
- Attend regular team meetings with assigned classrooms.
- Work with education staff, mental health consultants, EI/CPS staff and other pertinent individuals in meeting the needs of children with special needs.
- Facilitate the referral process to Early Intervention or Chicago Public Schools and provide support to families throughout the referral process. Aggressively pursue the best outcomes for children and families.
- Perform record-keeping and other reporting functions as required by Head Start Performance and NAEYC Standards and submit all agency reports in a timely manner.
- Work with the Support Services Manager to facilitate and ensure parent participation in the committee structure of the Head Start/Early Head Start delegate agency and city-wide council.
- Attend pertinent Head Start/Early Head Start and CPS committee meetings and trainings related to responsibilities above.
- Ensure that classroom ratios are in-compliance according to IL state license before leaving the building. (This applies when leaving for meetings/trainings, lunch break, or end of shift).
- Help manage the site ensuring proper teacher/child ratio according to IL state license during first and last hour of site operation according to shift.
- Ensure that supervisor and supporting staff are notified when you leave the building at any time during your shift.
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, all Gads Hill Center employees are responsible for the following:
- Participate in agency outreach and recruitment events, including evenings and weekends.
- Participates in supervision meetings and workshops within the agency and outside (if applicable).
- Participates in civic engagement activities that advance the mission of Gads Hill Center.
- Advance parent leadership development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field.
- A minimum of two years of experience working with children and families.
- Experience with multi-cultural programming preferred.
- Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License and use of a dependable insured car required.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and organization skills.
- Ability to pass a criminal record and child abuse/neglect registry check.
- A passion for the mission of Gads Hill Center.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License, access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally.
Entry Salary Range: $30-32,000
