The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota seeks a fellowship trained, board eligible or board certified neurosurgeon with a primary focus in spinal neurosurgery to enhance its programs in spinal neurosurgery and collaborations in the diagnosis and management of spinal disorders.
The successful applicant will be appointed on the Clinical Scholar track with primary focus on practice, teaching and research in clinical neurosurgical spinal surgery. Practice sites include the University of Minnesota Medical Center, its Ambulatory Surgical Center and outreach sites in the Fairview Health System. The Department supports a fully ACGME accredited residency training program in Neurological Surgery. Also, it jointly supports a Fellowship in Spinal Deformity Surgery with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. All faculty members participate in residency education.
Dr. Ann Parr’s laboratory investigates cellular therapies for restoration of spinal cord function. The University of Minnesota Medical School offers excellent opportunities for clinical and research collaboration with the Division of Orthopedic Spinal Surgery led by Dr. David Polly. The Institute for Engineering in Medicine supports the Center for Neuroengineering and the Medical Devices Center which are highly collaborative with medical school faculty. Also, Medtronic and many smaller biotechnology companies and an atmosphere conducive to innovative startup companies are located in Minneapolis, offering unparalleled opportunities for collaboration with the biotechnology industry.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary programs, documented surgical technical excellence and be prepared to develop a research program in spinal disorders. Experience in minimally invasive spinal neurosurgery is required. Full-time appointment on the clinical scholar track, level of appointment and compensation are dependent on the applicant’s qualifications and experience.
