The Division of Rheumatology is a unit within the Department of Medicine. Program initiatives in the Division of Rheumatology include research, clinical care, and education. Activities in support of these initiatives are carried out at the UW, HMC, VAPSHCS Hospital, and CHRMC.
The Division of Rheumatology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer 1. The mission of the Division of Rheumatology is to perform and provide superior patient care, research and education for arthritis and the rheumatic diseases. Twenty faculty members, thirty volunteer clinical faculty members and an able staff carry out the programs of this division.
The primary job functions are:
Perform primary cell isolation (mouse and human)
Cell culturing and in vitro assays
Perform FACS sorting and FACS analyses
Perform RNA isolation, RT-PCR, microarrays
Maintain a mouse colony, set up breeding and perform genotyping
Perform in vivo mouse studies
General lab maintenance, management, ordering and organizing
Develop new protocols
Record keeping, data collection and analysis
Read literature related to research projects
Generate periodic reports of work, including contribution to progress reports and publications
Interact with clinical and research investigators at external institutions and administrative center as needed
Communication and Teambuilding
Communicate clearly, directly and on a timely basis
Form productive working relationships with co-workers
Act as role model for new students
Open to receiving feedback and making constructive changes as a result
Open to receiving direction and asks for assistance when needed

Bachelor's degree in biology, immunology or other like field. Minimum 1 year experience with cellular and molecular biology, cell culturing, lab maintenance, experience with mouse colonies.
Must be highly motivated with excellent time management skills; ability to work flexible hours to meet experimental and project deadline requirements; strong attention to detail; ability to organize and maintain accurate records; experience using EXCEL; and the ability to work in a team environment and laboratory setting
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Experience with FACS analysis, RT-PCR, microarrays, fluorescent microscopy, histology.
