The University of Maryland,Baltimore (UMB) Writing Center seeks a full-time Multilingual (ESL) WritingSpecialist to join its vibrant and engaged staff of writers and writingconsultants.
UMB's students are linguistically diverse. They include students who arebilingual and multilingual, international students, speakers of worldEnglishes, and students from multilingual communities and backgrounds withinthe US. They are in different stages of their language acquisition processes.The UMB Writing Center values this linguistic diversity and the manylinguistic, rhetorical, experiential, and cultural resources our students,faculty, and staff bring to the UMB community. Most of our clients are workingon texts in the health sciences and human services fields; UMB consists ofseven schools focused in those areas: Graduate School, School of Dentistry,School of Law, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, andSchool of Social Work.
The UMB Writing Center provides free support for students, post-docs, faculty,and staff to improve their writing and English language skills and to becomemore independent, confident, and versatile writers. Our professionalconsultants, mostly graduate students in one of UMB's seven schools, serve asexpert, invested, and attentive readers who recognize writers' strengths andteach them specific strategies to improve their writing. The Writing Centercollaborates closely with academic departments in all seven schools as well aswith other campus-wide programs and units to offer an innovative array ofprogramming and services, including one-on-one consultations, synchronousonline consulting, interdisciplinary workshops (face-to-face and online), and writinggroups.
Reporting to the Director of the Writing Center, the Multilingual (ESL) WritingSpecialist collaborates with the Director to address the needs of the growingpopulation of multilingual students who use the Writing Center's services, toextend the reach of the Writing Center to better serve the multilingual studentbody across the UMB community, and to lead our staff in supporting andadvocating for our students as multilingual writers.

Directly support students via one-on-one and small-groupconsultations.
Develop new and revise existing programming, curricula, andresources with an eye to the needs of multilingual and ESL writers.
Support our staff of graduate writing consultants in theirwork with writers from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
Design and implement programming for the broader universitycommunity, including workshop design and implementation, one-on-oneconsultations, and orientations.
Assist Director in developing assessment methods to measurethe impact and effectiveness of Writing Center programming.
Collaborate with faculty from UMB's seven schools to createstudent and faculty resources.
Contribute to and bolster a culture of empowerment, inquiry,and explicit valuing of linguistic diversity in the Writing Center anduniversity community.
Actively engage in professional development to keep abreastof research and pedagogy relevant to language learning and teaching, andrepresent UMB and the Writing Center at local and regional conferences oncomposition, TESOL, and second language studies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
