Berklee seeks a Systems Engineer who is responsible for understanding the tactical and operational infrastructure of the College, the managing and monitoring of that environment, and its critical role in enabling the strategic mission and business processes of the College.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in heterogeneous technology environments, managing systems integrations, and troubleshooting complex issues. She or he will have experience managing and monitoring an environment that spans on-premises, co-located, hosted, and cloud architectures. She or he will be able to skillfully communicate complex business and technical processes in easy to understand visual documentation, with clear, concise oral skills, and have the patience and interpersonal skills to train and mentor technical colleagues on proper systems operation.
The Systems Engineer reports to the Sr. System Engineer and works with other senior technologists to ensure that the enterprise systems infrastructure is aligned with the strategic, tactical, and operational needs of the College.
The Systems Engineer holds primary responsibility for one or more of the infrastructure systems, acting as service owner, administrator and primary point of escalation for support issues.
Essential Functions/Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Have primary operational responsibilities for specific core infrastructure including SAN, NAS and VMware environments.
Work collaboratively with Systems Administrators, Systems Engineers and/or data center operations team(s) of staff, consultants and service providers, including any associated managed services.
Install, maintain and support systems and services for the distributed data center and cloud services operations.
Follow Change Management procedures and policies for the IT Operations team.
Participate in the Incident Management process and procedures for the IT Operations team.
Lead and/or work on specific technology projects within a dynamic portfolio of technology infrastructure upgrade projects.
Assist senior technical staff in project work and other advanced activities.
Implement, maintain and monitor enterprise systems and infrastructure systems and solutions deployed across on-premises, colocation, hosted and cloud services environments.
Execute assigned tasks from the Sr. Systems Engineer on specified systems.
Have focused expertise in backup\recovery management practices.
Implement and manage Citrix systems.
Assists in managing the runtime operation of the data center environments and all associated systems and data backup procedures and systems and application maintenance activities.
Manages Systems and Infrastructure change projects using appropriate change procedures and project management toolsets.
Lead the implementation, and support of the:
Microsoft Windows Server platforms,
Linux server platforms,
VMware server services infrastructure,
Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure,
Directory infrastructure (authentication & identity management, single sign-on),
Messaging infrastructure (listserv & mail relay, Google Apps GMail, spam filtering & spoof protection),
Web infrastructure supporting intranet and public web presence,
Citrix application hosting infrastructure.
Develop or manage proactive and reactive systems monitoring protocols and standards for the College’s heterogeneous systems environment.
Develop and manage incident management and response procedures.
Models excellent customer service and proactive problem solving and issue resolution.
Assist in development of security policies and implementation compliance requirements.
Assist in disaster recovery planning for enterprise IT resources.
Berklee College maintains a global infrastructure. Planned and unplanned work may be required after hours or on weekend.
The Systems Engineer is a part of the IT OPS support team and may be required to participate in 7 x24 on call coverage.
Light physical work as related to server systems may be required.
Employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the college campus, including occasional travel to any off-site hosting facilities.
Experience with enterprise storage area network (SAN) technology, managing block and unified storage arrays, multipath host configuration, and fabric zoning. Experience with network-attached solutions (NAS) and configuring network file systems (NFS, CIFS).
Strong background in Windows, Linux, and Apple system administration concepts and practices, including configuration of network services, servers, security, backup, recovery, automation, and system tuning.
Extensive experience with enterprise applications, protocols and standards, especially directory (LDAP), e-mail (SMTP, IMAP, POP3), calendaring, and web (HTTP) services.
Advanced knowledge of identity management concepts (Single Sign-On; Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting; LDAP; SSL/TLS; PKI).
Strong knowledge of systems and information security standards and their achievement in a heterogeneous environment.
Data center management and best practices, including virtualized computing and storage technologies, backup, recovery, and archiving strategies.
The Systems Engineer should have several years of experience interfacing with all of these technologies, some comfort level as an administrator for most of them, and deep core competency in some of the following:
Experience managing a VMWare vSphere cluster environment
Experience with Active Directory, OpenLDAP, Apache, MySQL, IIS, SQL Server, and database queries
Experience with Windows 2008, 2012; Linux, RHEL & Unix, IBM PowerPC (AIX/UNIX)
Experience with Citrix technologies
Experience with Google Apps Directory Sync & Google Apps Administration, and Office 365
Scripting or Programming Languages: Bash, batch, powershell, vbscript, C+, C# or similar
Knowledge of technology service frameworks such as ITIL
Experience working in an academic environment
Advanced Systems Administration Certifications: AIX, RHEL, MCP
Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, information technology, or related field or 5+ years equivalent work experience.
3+ years of demonstrated Technical proficiency, IT project leadership, documentation and architecture experience.
Current technology certifications preferred.
Must have experience with successful technology implementation and integration projects.
