University Housing, a unit within the Division of Student Affairs, consists of Housing Administration, Facilities Operations, University Housing Depot, Housing Technology, and Residential Life and Education, sharing the overall responsibility for serving the on-campus housing program for over 7,000 residents, which includes 3,300 students living in residence halls, 3,700 students in the Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon Village apartments; 45 students in Agriculture Housing units; 36 students in Cal Poly Lofts downtown; and housing approximately 16,000 guests annually. The University Housing Department consists of approximately 137 full-time staff, up to 50 part-time staff and 150+ student assistants with an overall annual Departmental operating budget of over $50 million.

The incumbent in this position is a member of the University Housing team. In conjunction with the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs/Executive Director, Senior Associate Director, Associate Directors and other managers, staff, and students, this position assists in carrying out the mission and philosophy of University Housing and is responsible for supporting and contributing to a positive atmosphere that facilitates respect, inclusivity and collaboration.
Typically, incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education, training, and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems, solving a wide range of problems, developing practicable and thorough solutions, and using effective communication and listening skills.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's Degree and two years of relevant experience (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis)
Demonstrated experience developing web and network applications, using modern languages and frameworks that could include, but are not limited to: Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, HTML5, XML, Drupal, and Bash.
Familiarity with modern database and information system technologies, including SQL, data warehouse, and data lake concepts and technologies with demonstrated experience in developing database queries using SQL to retrieve and manipulate data.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to gather, interpret, and assess information and data; and ability to understand and analyze problems from a broad, proactive approach.
Strong understanding of databases and data analysis procedures, with the ability to learn data management systems.
Demonstrated ability to integrate multiple applications and/or systems.
Demonstrated ability to analyze data requirements and research data availability and access methods.
Demonstrated experience using GIT or a similar control system for collaborative version control.
Working knowledge of systems architecture and enterprise design.
Thorough working knowledge of software development life cycle (SDLC), structured programming and object oriented design and development techniques, and change management.
Thorough working knowledge of testing practices and application debugging and troubleshooting procedures.
Demonstrated ability to identify and implement critical maintenance fixes and to isolate and correct malfunctions, including interface problems.
Demonstrated experience with UNIX, Windows, Macintosh, Android and iOS operating systems.
Proficient in administrating virtual servers including Linux-based and Windows environments, including installation and maintenance of required server-side dependencies.
Demonstrated ability to research and evaluate new technologies and software to meet user needs.
Demonstrated ability to work with technical and non-technical staff to identify user requirements and translate them into technology-based solutions.
Ability to use creative problem-solving skills and apply effective technical solutions.
Ability to apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate database security is maintained.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver formal and informal documentation, presentations, and training to a variety of end users.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to provide lead work direction and train others.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications within a diverse population, strong listening and interpretive skills, and the ability to deal positively with unexpected developments and diverse perspectives in and outside the University.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to work effectively in teams to accomplish team goals and completion of common objectives.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Master's or Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
Experience with enterprise implementations at an institution/educational environment utilizing customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Extensive development of mobile systems, applications and frameworks.
Experience with application patterns (e.g., SOA, REST, MVC).
Demonstrated experience with Cron Jobs and shell scripts.
Demonstrated experience with agile software development methodologies (e.g., SCRUM, XP, KanBan).
Demonstrated experience with test driven development and continuous integration to support iterative product releases.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be able to rotate evening, weekend, and holiday "on-call" hours, and be reached in support of production processing.
This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date.
