The Assistant Director creates and carries out campus programs designed for the support of international students, as well as the integration of these students in the broader campus base. This integral staff member maintains excellent rapport with the international student community and works to creatively design and implement new programs that encourage international student integration, support, and community building. This position is also responsible for immigration management and compliance, including advising international students. The successful candidate for this position will be able to work well independently and in a team environment, will have a passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds, and enjoys creative and collaborative programming. After-hours (night and/or weekend hours) are sometimes required.
International Student Services forms a part of the larger area of Intercultural, Equity & Advocacy focused on diversity & inclusion within the Division of Student Affairs. This position reports to the Director of International Student Services.
Programming and Support
1. Creates and carries out new or continuing educational and cultural programs for the greater campus, including marketing and publicizing events using social media, etc.
2. Develops programming directed specifically toward strengthening and supporting the international community.
a. Coordinates programs each semester for the international community.
b. Provides or coordinates need-based services such as trips to the Department of Motor Vehicles and Social Security Administration.
c. Provides outreach, support, and advises cultural student organizations, communicating about upcoming events and assisting with programming related to ISS initiatives.
d. Reviews international student retention and success and develops data and solutions to emerging issues.
3. Serves as liaison to Residential Education.
a. Serves as staff advisor for Leiser Intercultural House, a living learning community.
b. Works with the student Affinity Leader from Leiser on programming.
c. Leads facility review for capital requests for Leiser House.
d. Works in consultation with Residential Education staff to communicate break opportunities, storage, and meal accessibility.
4. Co-facilitates International Orientation Assistant (IOA), Leader (IOL) and Coordinator (IOC) recruitment, selection, and training, as well as further developing mentorship capacity within this group.
5. Assists in the planning and execution of International Orientation, including reservations, outreach, and program logistics, assuring an intentional and supportive transition for all participants, with close collaboration among various campus partners.
6. Manages recruitment, pairing, and programming for the International Friendship Host Family Program.
Advising and Immigration Compliance
1. Serves as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer in SEVIS.
a. Advises students on immigration, employment, personal, and cultural issues.
b. Maintains current knowledge of immigration regulations pertinent to F1 status and J1 status.
c. Utilizes TerraDotta software for SEVIS reporting, file notes, and case management.
d. Issues I-20 and DS-2019 documents, as we as signs documents for travel purposes.
2. Coordinates international mailings for new student document issuance.
3. Supports international students through the use of Glacier Tax Prep or similar tax software.
3. Responsible for creating and updating content for the ISS website.
Other Duties and Outreach
1. Supervises student employees.
2. Maintains professional relationships with Admissions, the Career Development Center, the Office of Global and Off-Campus Education, Housing and Residential Education, other student affairs professionals, and faculty members as collaborators and colleagues.
3. Performs other duties as assigned.
Meetings & Professional Development
1. Attends weekly individual meetings with the Director of International Student Services.
2. Attends departmental staff meetings.
3. Attends monthly Division of Student Affairs meetings.
4. Attends other meetings as required.
5. Attends one external conference related to the field and attend other on-campus professional development opportunities as appropriate.
