The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks a creative, energetic professional for the position of Project Coordinator Librarian in the Department of Special Collections & Archives. The position is embedded in the UCI Libraries’ Transforming Knowledge/Transforming Libraries Project which will integrate library and archival studies into the ethnic studies curriculum. The position will guide and mentor undergraduate students who are committed to documenting the experiences of ethnic and underrepresented communities of Orange County, California. The students will gain first-hand experience in building and providing access to the nation’s digital cultural heritage. This full-time, temporary position will be available July 1, 2017 and will end in June 2020.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Project Coordinator Librarian will oversee the Transforming Knowledge/Transforming Libraries research project, an IMLS-funded effort to study the impact of integrating library and information studies into the ethnic studies curriculum and provide undergraduates in these programs with first-hand experience in building and providing access to the nation’s digital cultural heritage. The position will report to the Head of Special Collections & Archives and University Archivist and will work in consultation with the Archivist for the Southeast Asian Archive and the Archivist for Orange County Regional History. In partnership with the UCI departments of Asian American Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, and African American Studies, the Project Coordinator Librarian will introduce concepts of archives, cataloging/metadata, information literacy, and digital projects to undergraduate students in these programs. The Project Coordinator Librarian will recruit, train, and supervise a diverse group of students in paid summer assistant positions to contribute materials and metadata into a central digital collection hosted by the California Digital Library’s Calisphere portal. The Project Coordinator Librarian will work collaboratively to coordinate workflows and communication among various stakeholders across the campus and in the Orange County, California community, implement public programming, facilitate archival processing, and serve as project lead for the digital portal project, including conducting user design and experience research. The Project Coordinator Librarian may participate in campus events, instruction, exhibits, and other activities related to the project.
