The Director oversees all aspects of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and develops and manages a program portfolio supporting curricular and co-curricular success, retention, lawful status, personal well-being, and employment of international students and scholars.
Develops a vision and implements a strategy for International Student and Scholar Services at Drake University, including fiscal planning.
Manages international student and scholar services including non-academic advising, programming, outreach activities, and community involvement for approximately 300 international students.
Expands and enhances campus-wide support to international students and creates new opportunities that will encourage cultural engagements between international and domestic students.
Oversees the Intensive English Program.
Collaborates with Admission colleagues on international student recruitment and enrollment strategies.
Oversee, direct, and manage ISSS program
Develop program objectives for ISSS and regularly assess and refine programming to meet identified outcomes
Create and direct programming that creates and supports an interculturally sensitive and inclusive environment for international students on Drake’s campus
Collaborate with other directors in Drake International in an effort to maximize opportunities related to international students and scholars
Serve as a resource for other units in their efforts to bring international students and scholars to campus
Serve as PDSO and RO and have oversight of maintaining Drake’s designation to host F1 and J1 visa students; oversee SEVIS and immigration regulation compliance, reporting and crisis management; and interface with leadership as needed on immigration-related topics
Manage ISSS budget
Provide oversight for Intensive English Program
Work with Executive Director to create vision and strategy for IEP, including growth model and sustainability plan
Ensure the IEP meets identified needs and objectives
Hire, supervise, and oversee professional development of IEP Coordinator
Supervise ISSS Staff
Hire, supervise, and oversee professional development of international student advisor
Provide training as necessary for staff on immigration regulations and policies
Explore and develop revenue opportunities related to international student, scholar, and IEP programs
Create customized programs in cooperation with other Drake faculty/staff, partner universities and community organizations
Seek external funding for new programs or to help sustain existing programs
Serve as Drake ISSS and/or Drake International representative as appropriate
Attend professional conferences
Participate in campus committees
Explore and pursue collaboration with international partners, feeder schools, campus organizations, and alumni
Deliver workshops or programming in areas of specialty
Other duties as assigned
Master's degree in International Education or related discipline;
3-5 years experience advising/working with international students/scholars and knowledge and understanding of international programs, scholar support services and advising support programs;
Previous supervisory/managerial experience;
Must have the ability to travel (domestically and internationally) for university business as needed;
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and working groups to identify and achieve desired outcomes;
Experience with financial management, budgeting, and external funding sources;
Working knowledge of policies and procedures regarding visa issuance, SEVIS* regulations and reporting;
Working knowledge ofDepartment of Homeland Security regulations and Immigration and Customs Enforcement regulations regarding foreign students and scholars in the U.S.;
Experience with MS Office, Blackboard and/or other educational support services software.
Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) or Principal Designated School Official (PDSO), and as a Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO);
Experience working with Intensive English Programs
Demonstrated ability to design programming that advances the integration and retention of international students;
Ability to plan, organize, challenge, and lead staff, academic departments, and other campus units to maximize opportunities related to international student and scholar engagement and support
Advanced knowledge of cross-cultural advising, specifically as it relates to the U.S. context;
Working knowledge of a language other than English.
*Special Condition Requirement: must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States to meet federal regulatory requirements for SEVIS access and to serve as a DSO, PDSO, RO, or ARO.
