Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Online Education, the Online Course Developer is responsible for creating instructor-led undergraduate and graduate courses for Berklee Online, the online extension school of the college. The Online Course Developer is responsible for hands-on development of online courses in collaboration with faculty members and staff, including video producers, graphic designers, copyeditors, music notation specialists, software developers, and others. He/she will design and develop project-based learning experiences and multimedia-learning interactions, as well as pioneer innovative and practical approaches to designing and developing courses for a custom-designed Canvas learning platform.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Identify and implement innovative instructional design strategies and learning methodologies for graduate and undergraduate instructor-led courses in music that provide the best possible learning experience for students.
Provide training and instructional design feedback to course authors in order to create compelling online learning experiences.
Develop project schedules and effectively manage author deliverables and resources to ensure the timely completion of courses.
Develop content, including text, graphics, and multimedia, using tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, audio editing programs, Berklee Online’s content management system, and other technologies as necessary.
Collaborate with the Senior Director of Online Education, faculty, course developers, software developers, graphic designers, editors, student workers, and others to design and develop courses and related materials for delivery online.
Collaborate with the video production team to create compelling video for courses that strengthens the learning experience and provides for promotional content on various distribution channels.
Work with the marketing team to identify and gather compelling learning examples and other relevant information for course promotion opportunities.
Work on multiple courses at a time, developing new courses within a six- to eight-month timeframe and revising courses as necessary.
Monitor newly launched and revised courses for effectiveness.
Stay informed of trends in online learning, including new learning technologies and new feature sets available in Canvas, and devise plans for implementing what is best-in-breed and enhances the learning experience.
A solid understanding of web and mobile technologies.
Multi-faceted production experience in an online education, training, or digital media environment, including experience designing and developing courses with rich multimedia.
Familiarity with learning management systems, preferably Canvas.
Strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to maintain high levels of creativity and quality.
Demonstrated experience working effectively with subject matter experts to develop content.
Experience with academic institutions and adult learners.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, and work on multiple projects simultaneously with great efficiency and attention to detail.
Must be a self-starter with the ability to work in a team-based, fast-paced atmosphere with high standards for quality, accuracy, and innovation.
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required. Master’s degree in instructional design or related field preferred.
A passion for music, online learning, and quality.
A background in instructional design, education, and/or learning theory, with at least three years experience in course development in an online learning environment.
A strong musical background, including knowledge of music theory. Additional knowledge of music production and the music business is preferred.
