Under general supervision, the Apple Systems Engineer supports the Customer and Technology Support (CTS) group and its interface with other campus systems and services; provides system analysis, modification, maintenance, installation, and administration functions and supports internal ITS support staff and the user community on the use of these systems. This position also maintains and supports assigned systems to ensure system availability, integrity and reliability.
This position is part of a team of desktop engineers responsible for developing enterprise client solutions for Apple and Microsoft platforms. The team is also responsible for providing escalated support for desktop support technicians in multiple units across campus. The incumbent in this position works in an environment that values collaboration, teamwork, and knowledge sharing with an emphasis on documenting best practices. This position specializes in managing Apple mobile and desktop platforms (macOS, iOS, and tvOS), including Mobile Device Management (MDM) technologies. This position is responsible for building and deploying Apple operating system images, application installers, and shell scripts with an emphasis on automation.
The career level is broad and includes intermediate through senior level positions. Incumbents at this level work relatively independently and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments defined for their position. Typically, incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education, training, and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems, solving a wide range of problems and developing practicable and thorough solutions, and using effective communication and listening skills.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant experience (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to 2 years of required education on a year-for-year basis).
Experience providing exceptional customer service with a high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated experience administering modern operating systems and familiarity with application software running in enterprise environments.
Thorough knowledge of Apple mobile and desktop operating systems, configuration, and support tools.
Experience with Mobile Device Management tools.
Knowledge of automation tools including shell scripting.
Demonstrated ability with installing and using system configuration and management tools in an enterprise level directory service, including Active Directory or OpenLDAP.
Thorough working knowledge of and experience with network/client/server protocols.
Thorough knowledge of server virtualization practices and experience with virtualization software.
Demonstrated ability to develop efficient operating system images and deployment plans using standardized processes and tools.
Demonstrated ability to identify, recommend and develop system utility programs and procedures to enhance operations, applications, and general system usage.
Experience using structured operating system skills in support of enterprise operating systems environments.
Thorough knowledge of and experience using current operating system administration practices, including backup/restore, system maintenance, network interface, and security.
Demonstrated ability to plan upgrades to system configuration that improve utilization and reliability based on analysis of application and production requirements.
Working knowledge of common software application packages and tools for performance monitoring and issues tracking.
Demonstrated ability to research and evaluate new technologies and vendor software to meet user needs.
Demonstrated ability to work with technical and non-technical staff to identify user requirements and translate them into technology-based solutions.
Ability to use creative problem-solving skills and apply effective technical solutions.
Ability to apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate security is maintained.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver formal and informal documentation, presentations, and training to a variety of end users.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to foster and maintain positive and professional working relationships; ability to effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to provide lead work direction and train others.
Interest and ability to maintain and enhance technical currency.
General knowledge of requirements for accessibility compliance.
Degree in computer science or related field.
Demonstrated ability to secure Apple systems by managing configuration profiles, encryption, and firewalls, including delegated permission environments with role-based permissions.
Experience using enterprise management applications, installers, and Mobile Device Management (MDM) tools to manage Apple devices.
Demonstrated ability to develop scripts in Python, Bash, or Ruby to Automate macOS deployments.
Understanding of Windows System Administration utilizing Active Directory, Group Policy, and SCCM.
Experience deploying technology and working in virtual environments.
Experience with the Lean Management System.

Ability to safely move equipment up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
This position classification has been defined as exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Must be able to adjust working hours to meet special jobs. Must be able to work occasional overtime or holidays on an as-needed basis.
May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date.
