Celebrating over 20years of innovative social work practice in Baltimore, the Social WorkCommunity Outreach Service (SWCOS) was launched in 1992. SWCOS' mission is tocreate and implement innovative models of social work education and servicethat strengthen individuals, families, organizations, and communities inBaltimore and Maryland. This is accomplished through strategic collaborationsbetween agency, staff, faculty, students and community representatives.
ThePositive Schools Center, an initiative of SWCOS, will promote the developmentof positive supportive and mindful learning communities where students andschool staff connect, develop and grow. The Positive Schools Center aims to partnerwith school districts to identify and collaborate around issues related toschool climate and punitive discipline, especially when those issues result inhigh rates of suspensions and expulsions. The Positive Schools Center's school climate framework will beincorporated into the SWCOS-Operated Community Schools as well as throughoutschools across the state of Maryland. Positive, supportive and mindful learningcommunities will be places where students & school staff can:
Connect with each other (staff with staff,students with students, staff with students, and staff with families) in a safeand positive environment in a mindful manner;
Positively develop as students and staff(academically/professionally, socially, and emotionally); and
Grow as student scholars and educationalleaders.
The Director of ThePositive Schools Center will partner with administrators and staff in all 24Maryland school districts to help improve school climate, and reduce theout-of-school suspensions and expulsions of students of color and students withdisabilities from public schools in the state of Maryland.
Develop and maintain strategicrelationships with key educators and senior administrators at all levels ofstate, federal and local government, including principals and superintendents.
Plan, implement and oversee all aspectsof The Center, including managing budgets and grants
Engage school districts incollaborative conversations designed to obtain information about previous andcurrent activities, needs, and interests related to school climate andsupportive discipline
Conceptualize, plan and implementinteractive training sessions for district and school leaders, staff andteachers
Recruit, hire, contract and manageconsultants in a variety of topic areas
