UPMC CancerCenter is currently hiring a regular Full Time Unit Director to lead the Outpatient Medical Oncology team at the Hillman Cancer Center located in Shadyside/Pittsburgh, PA.
This position will work a regular Monday through Friday daylight schedule and be responsible for complete oversight of a large medical oncology practice within a hospital based clinic, including both clinic and treatment room care of patients
- UD position has a full time clinician to support the treatment room (50 bed/chair)
- Approximately 40 FTE oversight not including 8 medical oncology practices
- Reports to Senior Director of Operations
The Unit Director maintains the operational health of the clinical area, effectively managing financial, human resources, administrative, and clinical concerns as required to ensure the success of the unit. Unit Directors seek to create a workplace environment conducive to open dialogue and exceptional nursing practice, and proactively raise standards in patient care and safety through unit-based quality improvement initiatives. An experienced clinician with strong problem-solving skills, the Unit Director uses research and evidence-based practice to identify clinical problems and improve patient outcomes.
As Unit Director, you will collaborate with the medical staff and senior management to set goals and priorities, design action plans for improvement, and implement practical changes. You will maintain 24-hour accountability for the leadership of your unit, acting as a trusted mentor to your own staff while also serving as a key representative of the hospital both internally and externally.

- Collaborates with medical staff to monitor patient outcomes, set clinical quality priorities, and recommend/implement professional improvements and initiatives as well as unit-based patient safety initiatives.
- Monitors dashboard indicators and quality in unit/department to meet organizational goals and develops action plans to address specific concerns and improve quality. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care.
- Analyzes nurse and patient satisfaction outcome data and develops action plan to address as needed. Supports and encourages involvement of staff nurses in the development and implementation of evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives.
- Sets clinical, financial, and human resources priorities for improvement in concert with organizational goals. Demonstrates sound fiscal responsibility in the development and management of the department budget and holds staff accountable for the efficient use of resources including, but not limited to, managing flexible staffing patterns to meet patient care needs.
- Applies critical thinking skills and utilizes financial and quality data and conceptual knowledge in development of the department vision and operational plan.
- Demonstrates the ability to create a shared vision: involves staff and key stakeholders in the development of a vision for the unit/department within a shared governance model of practice. Involves stakeholders and experts in planning, designing, and redesigning change.
- Orchestrates complex change and acknowledges the psychological transition on self and others; supports staff during times of difficult transitions.
