Involves conceiving, researching, writing, editing, and / or publishing written materials and strategic communications, including publications, articles, proposals, speeches, and promotional material.
Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.
Under general direction of the Business Communications Director, the Writer/Editor is responsible for writing, editing and proofreading all marketing communications, such as but not limited to, the course catalog, brochures, web copy, press releases, advertisements, student testimonials, social media posts, blogs, presentations, proposals, administrative documents. Conducts research for accuracy of written pieces, selects sources for and conducts interviews. Performs analysis of varied communications tactics to evaluate and analyze effectiveness, develop insights, present findings, and communicate recommendations. Accountable for the planning, managing, and execution of assigned duties and projects.
The Writer/Editor is responsible for the editorial quality of UCSC Silicon Valley Extension publications, electronic and printed pieces, ensuring overall grammatical accuracy and editorial style consistency, and global implemention of appropriate style changes. This position requires a thorough understanding of UCSC Extension offerings, and the ability to be diplomatic and to negotiate with staff.
A majority of tasks and projects rely on the coordinated efforts of the entire Marketing team. The Writer/Editor will therefore work in partnership with department colleagues, as well as with staff and management, outside the Marketing department.

This position is located in Silicon Valley, near Great America Parkway and 101.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training in journalism, English or other mass communication disciplines
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation
Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines
Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message
Basic understanding of marketing principles and tactics
