The Department of Music at Augsburg College invites applications for the position of part-time instructor in jazz performance. The department seeks a creative and visionary individual who will advance music's curricular alignment with college-wide priorities of social justice, urban education, diversity, and inclusion. In accord with the recently released College Music Society report, Transforming Music Study from its Foundations, the department seeks a person who is professionally and personally committed to the core values of creativity, diversity, and integration. Musically, this may mean consideration of jazz experiences beyond traditional big band instrumentation and style, inclusion of non-Western influences, collaborative performance with musicians from diverse traditions, and community partnerships. Maximum teaching load will be equivalent of two courses per semester.
Augsburg's music department is primarily undergraduate, with majors and concentrations in music therapy, music education, performance, and music business. It offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Science degrees. There are currently about 100 undergraduate majors. The department offers a master's degree in music therapy.
The successful candidate will possess a background in jazz performance and teaching, a desire to lead an innovative program, knowledge of instrumental techniques and methods, repertoire knowledge to engage students representing a range of abilities and achievement levels, interest in diverse musical traditions, and creative teaching strategies. Master's degree required.
