As a Netter Center Fellow, a graduating Penn senior (May 2017) — who has worked with the Netter Center for Community Partnerships and particularly its university-assisted community schools program as undergraduates – will be offered an opportunity to engage meaningfully in Netter’s work to advance University-Assisted Community Schools (UACS) programs with a specific focus on expanding employment opportunities to West Philadelphia youth. This will be a one-year appointment starting in late May 2017. The position will work under the College Access and Career Readiness program.
The Netter Center expects to provide the Netter Fellow opportunities to engage in research, program design, meet leaders of major local and national organizations, as well as become involved with influential national networks in the field of university civic engagement and youth employment. The Netter Center also expects that a Netter Center Fellow will, as a young scholar, begin to contribute to the field through research, publications, and presentations at conferences. The Fellow will work with employers to identify specific youth employment opportunities and the skills required for those.
The Netter Center Fellow will not only generate and further develop plans for the Netter Center’s youth employment efforts but also work directly with the staff and high school students participating in the instructional components of the project. Project components will include but not be limited to career exposure, career readiness, internships, and direct connections to employment opportunities. Specific responsibilities will include instruction of high school students in employment skills, monitoring student performance at the worksites, and maintaining contact with employers. The Fellow will propose what should go into students’ college access career readiness (CACR) portfolios. The Fellow will also develop opportunities for Netter Center-wide learning about youth employment.
Additionally, the Fellow will identify and meet with local youth employment partners to cultivate relationships with groups doing similar work. The Fellow will work to identify partners also working to support West Philadelphia High School and Sayre High School students in college access career readiness (CACR). The Fellow will also work on efforts to increase outreach to recent graduates of partner high schools regarding employment opportunities.
The Netter Fellow will be based at the Netter Center and work under the direction of the Director of University-Assisted Community Schools and also the Training and Technical Assistance Coordinator, College Access and Career Readiness.
