Oregon State University (OSU) – Cascades, in Bend, Oregon is seeking an Executive Director for the Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. The person in this position works at OSU-Cascades, located in Bend, Oregon. Reappointment is at the discretion of the OSU-Cascades Associate VP of Finance and Strategic Planning.
The Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship (ICE) provides an interface between the Central Oregon business community and OSU-Cascades, with a goal of catalyzing new business development that drives economic growth in the region. Located within the OSU-Cascades Graduate Research Center, ICE is poised as a hub for startups in bioscience, software, outdoor products, food and beverage, and other industries in our region. The goals of ICE are (1) to increase the probability of success for new businesses by providing shared access to resources, equipment, physical space, and entrepreneurial expertise; (2) to deliver educational programming for both existing and new businesses; and (3) to involve students and faculty to train a 21st century workforce. Similar institutes, albeit on a much larger scale, include Northwestern University’s Garage, Oregon State University’s Advantage Accelerator, OTRADI Bioscience Incubator, Seattle’s Cambia Grove, and other university-led business accelerators.
The Executive Director is responsible for aligning ICE with the economic direction of the region, implementing solutions to facilitate the creation and launch of new businesses, organizing educational programming, facilitating the involvement of faculty and students, and designing a sustainable financial model for operations. The ideal candidate exhibits high-energy, “startup DNA,” with experience from incubators, venture capital, research institutions, and “labs”-like divisions within large enterprises. As a connector, manager, and visionary, the results-oriented candidate should be able to position ICE to lead within a university-led innovation district in the heart of Central Oregon, quickly distinguishing itself as an “innovation region.”
In addition to helping entrepreneurs more rapidly evolve ideas from concept through operational maturity, ICE’s objectives include developing regionally employable and entrepreneurial OSU-Cascades graduates and community members that will start new businesses, attract new businesses to the region, and/or enable regional businesses to grow.
Through a combination of incubation and accelerator services, business and industry leadership, facilities and infrastructure support, and structured training and mentoring, ICE will provide space, people and support for distinguishing Bend and Central Oregon as a favorable environment for starting and growing businesses.
The candidate will be able to begin employment in June or July 2017, and will report to the Associate VP of Finance and Strategic Planning and the Dean of Academic Affairs.
