Under a newly formed Cooperative Agreement between the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), comprehensive studies are being conducted on the bioeconomics and biological life histories of Pacific coast salmon species. The primary purpose of these studies is to provide critical information in support of conservation and management of threatened and endangered species. The research team conducting laboratory and field studies consists of UCSC staff, faculty, and students, and collaborative researchers from the NMFS Santa Cruz Laboratory. Actual fieldwork is conducted in streams, rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters of Central and Northern California. Results from this program are intended to benefit resource (e.g., Pacific Fisheries Management Council) and fisheries and resource science in general.
Qualifications include: - Knowledge such as attained in lower division coursework leading to a Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries, Fisheries Science, Wildlife, Biology, Zoology, or other related field
- Knowledge sufficient to perform basic statistical analysis
- Experience using microscopes and general laboratory equipment, particularly scale and otolith mounting/analysis and invertebrate sorting
- Experience using general field equipment, including battery and solar powered sources, PIT tag reading, acoustic and radio tracking equipment
- Experience with salmonid field ID, spawner surveys, acoustic and radio tracking and operation of fish weirs and smolt traps.
