The University of Michigan is seeking a visionary leader with administrative experience in health care or human service settings to direct the Mary A. Rackham Institute (MARI). The Director will have an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students at the MARI to lead and develop creative, interdisciplinary approaches to providing mental health, language and literacy services; training of clinical professionals, and engaging in collaborative research and community outreach. The position is a 50% appointment. The salary will be competitive based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. We hope to fill the position with a candidate who can begin work in January 2018.
This half-time appointment as the MARI Senior Director is an ideal position for a university faculty member from a variety of disciplines or backgrounds, including psychology, psychiatry, social work, or language and communication, who can combine this responsibility with an on-going faculty role. For highly qualified applicants, we are open to other arrangements.
Founded in 1936, the MARI has a $3.3 million annual operating budget and 108 staff, trainees, and volunteers in its three constituent centers: University Center for Language and Literacy, University Psychological Clinic, University Center for the Child and Family, and the shared Central Office. The mission of the MARI is to serve the university and broader community with compassionate, science-based services for mental health, language and literacy concerns; and to provide outstanding training and education to the next generation of service providers. MARI offers an APA-accredited training program for clinical psychology graduate students in addition to training opportunities for social workers and psychiatrists. It has connections to several University departments, research and service units, and the director will have the opportunity to build and strengthen these connections. The MARI is a unit of the Rackham Graduate School at the University of Michigan, and the Senior Director reports to the Dean. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Advance and direct strategic planning and development for new and existing MARI services, interdisciplinary training programs, collaborative research initiatives; budget planning; fiscal and human resource allocation; marketing; and fundraising. Represent the Institute within and outside the University to develop collaborative initiatives and alliances with relevant professional agencies and organizations.
Provide effective, efficient cross-unit clinical and research administration, shared business operations support to, and oversight of MARI sub-units. Ensure compliance with University, federal, HIPAA, Council of Accreditation, financial, employment, IT and network security regulations and requirements. Ensure continuous staff professional training and development. Ensure productive referral and reimbursement relationships with other providers and insurers.
Provide direct functional and administrative supervision of the directors of University Center for Language and Literacy, University Psychological Clinic, University Center for the Child and Family and of the MARI assistant director.
Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent combination of education and experience in a relevant field of study. Licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or speech-language pathologist. In-depth understanding of high-quality clinical settings and demonstrated understanding of training needs for clinicians and clinical researchers. Demonstrated leadership, initiative, judgment, and creative problem solving skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to provide leadership in a highly interactive environment characterized by multiple, and occasionally competing, goals, priorities and interests. Progressively responsible administrative experience in a mental health or rehabilitative setting, and the ability to successfully navigate the complexities of a university setting. Experience in academic or clinical administrative operations management and resource development including a commitment to the provision of excellent, accessible, flexible and responsive clinical services and the ability to develop and implement innovative clinical programs and collaborative research. Evidence of commitment to education and training of clinical providers and clinical researchers, with a commitment to the integration of science and practice. Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a strong personal commitment to apply and incorporate the difference, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization and increasing their participation in the MARI clinical, research, and training programs and operations. Understands and appreciates overall University objectives and of the academic goals of graduate education. Experience in budgeting and fiscal management. Knowledge of the reimbursement environment. Knowledge of the strengths and contributions of current and potential partners for MARI units. Applicants need not have a current active research program, although research experience and a track record of programmatic research and publication is desirable.
