School of Medicine - Medical Education Support Services
Teaching Assistants (formerly titled as standardized patients) portray patients for formative learning and summative evaluation of health care students. In addition to portraying clinical case presentations, Teaching Assistants (or TAs) also evaluate students from the "patient" perspective.
As adjuncts to faculty, TAs assess communication skills of medical, nursing, dental and allied health students, and serve as patient models for students who are learning general physical examination skills. Some cases will require TAs to wear hospital gowns for a general examination.
All TAs receive training from faculty in physical examination techniques pertinent to their respective cases, plus training in evaluation of students and delivery of constructive feedback to students. Teaching assistants are expected to have excellent memory and communication skills to fulfill those multiple responsibilities. Teaching assistants also may help program staff with background duties during major exam events, such as assisting with student rotations and with setting up/taking down examination supplies.
Ability to accurately and consistently portray specific case presentations;
Ability to improvise in character without changing conditions of the case;
Ability to evaluate students using a faculty-developed rubric, on a computer;
Ability to deliver constructive, written and verbal feedback to students;
Accurate memory to evaluate students after each scenario
