Department: Pathology Work Schedule/Hours: Monday-Friday some week-ends 8:30a.m.-5:00p.m. 40 hrs.
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager or Medical Director or Principal Investigator or designee; performs a variety of both routine and complex laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures. This individual will perform a variety of technical procedures on clinical and research specimens in the histology laboratory, performs high complexity procedures including but not limited to gross handling of clinical small biopsy specimens. Using knowledge and judgment completes description and tissue preparation for histological examination following regulatory requirements. *Required attendance employee. In the event of unexpected university closings including inclement weather, the employee in this position is required to report to work and/or remain at work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The qualified individual will be responsible for performing the day-to-day technical procedures on clinical and research specimens including the following activities: *prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist or investigator. *performs grossing/dissection of small specimens using skills and knowledge of tissue type and muscle structure. *accessions and bills specimens *maintains laboratory equipment *programs tissue processors *performs routine histology on human and animal specimens, special stain techniques; embeds specimens; prepares various staining solutions; decalcification and staining of bone specimens, operating automated slide and cassettes, loads tissue processors, handles wet tissue and frozen tissue sectioning. *performs quality assurance procedures such as block and slide match, reports discrepancies per standard operating procedure.
Maintains and troubleshoots equipment, routine repairs or notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur. Performs related general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records. Maintain accurate and detailed records. Provide accurate information on work conducted for client billing purposes.
Associates degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology, or a related discipline required. Additional related experience can substitute for education. HT (ASCP) eligible. Some related experience required. Additional related education can substitute for experience.
Computer experience including MS Office, database, and email. Telephone and Fax. Experience with laboratory tools and equipment. *Individual must meet minimum CLIA requirements for high complexity testing (ANP.11610); evidence of compliance with records of qualifications including degree or transcript and work history in related field.
An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have a laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual perform high complexity testing.
Work produced is subject to precise measure of quantity and quality; Attention to detail is critical to the successful performance of this job as it directly affects research outcomes.
Knowledge of normal human tissue morphology is essential. Able to perform paraffin as well as frozen sectioning, H&E staining, and to recognize discrepancies and take corrective action.
Individual should have strong written communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.
