Provide technical support in the Cutaneous Nerve Laboratory. (The lab specializes in the localization of peripheral nerves in the skin.) Under supervision, will be taught to perform and understand histology principles for routine specimen handling following established procedures. Once training has been completed, independently follow established protocols in order to assure that the lab meets workflow targets. Use a custom database for accessioning and tracking research and clinical specimens. Handle and process specimens, document data and report of diagnostic test results. Contribute to the routine maintenance and organization of worksheets and will be expected to gain an understanding of the histology laboratory operation to assist investigators as needed. Protocols involved require maintenance of careful logs of environmental and procedural elements under CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, OSEH and FDA regulations, as well as, required by research protocols. Work on development of new clinical testing protocols.
Additional duties include stereologic nerve quantitation, blinding of clinical and research projects, and interacting with administration regarding clinical insurance issues. Other duties include processing, monitoring and troubleshooting clinical billing using established CPT codes for this lab's services and billing guidelines. May assist either the physicians or their assistants during skin biopsies. (This primarily entails explaining the procedure to the patients, filling out study-related forms and handling specimen tubes during the procedure.) May conduct screening and recruitment of study subjects as needed.
This laboratory must process samples in a timely fashion to provide accurate results for diagnostic use and must meet protocol deadlines. Participate daily in the hands-on work of the lab. Chemicals used on a daily basis must be made properly using established protocols. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or a laboratory supervisor, perform routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue. Conduct quality control and quality assurance checks on laboratory reports and communicate with outside testing labs to resolve discrepancies. Maintain aseptic technique and demonstrate organization, problem solving, resourcefulness and flexibility. Follow various regulatory guidelines (CAP, CLIA, FDA, JCAHO, OSEH). Maintain data in both hard copy and using database tools to include various daily record updates, including items like performance improvements, quality assurance and quality control measures.
May process and ship blood-related specimens to outside central labs. (Some of these samples will be express shipped out to other labs and others will be placed into an organized repository at this location.) Manage biohazard waste per JHMI policies. Following the appropriate training, adhere to JHMI policies on Human Subjects Protection, HIPAA, DOT/IATA, Blood borne pathogens, Fire Safety, Laboratory Safety, and other potential renewals as required by Sponsors/University.
