Department: Chemistry and Biochemistry
Summary of Duties:
Teaches two general chemistry lecture courses per year or one general chemistry lecture course and one special assignment of comparable workload for general chemistry students, at the discretion of the Vice Chair for Undergraduate Studies; co-leads the department teaching assistant training prior to each academic term; provides leadership for the continuous training of all graduate teaching associates (GTAs), undergraduate teaching assistants, and staff teaching associates (STAs); addresses TA issues and develops action plans for underperforming TAs; assists Vice Chair of Undergraduate Studies with responding to student conduct and academic misconduct violations; supervises TAs leading recitations; organizes the general chemistry recitation peer evaluation program; communicates with the university Office of International Affairs to provide effective programming for international TAs and international students; works with the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching (UCAT) to provide professional development opportunities for TAs; serves as the Peer-led Team Learning (PLTL) Coordinator for CHEM 1612 and CHEM 1622; recruits, trains, and evaluates PLTL mentors; instructs peer mentors on procedures, policies, and teaching techniques; holds weekly meetings with PLTL mentors; develops assessment metrics for the PLTL program; organizes the work of the general chemistry exam writing committee; oversees the development, verification, and categorization of midterm exam questions; ensures that high-quality exams are written, vetted, and entered into ParTest by established deadlines; assists in conducting pedagogical studies to inform future course policies; assists with department outreach efforts and the development of materials; assists with developing and implementing department wide metacognition sessions; attends workshops and lecture series on the latest improvements in chemistry education; other duties as assigned.
Master’s Degree in Chemical Education, Chemistry, or Biochemistry; experience instructing students in General Chemistry at a large institution (preferably as both a graduate student and as a lecturer).
PhD or EdD in Chemical Education, Chemistry, or Biochemistry; experience with in supervising, materials development and teaching as well as experience serving on an exam writing committee (such as the ACS exam writing committee); demonstrated ability to lead and motivate learners; familiarity with PLTL learning techniques; experience conducting pedagogical studies.
Target Salary: $55,300.00 - $58,500.00 Annually
