The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences in Blacksburg, VA is seeking applications to fill a part time, temporary non-salaried wage staff position (limited to 1500 hrs/year). Responsibilities are to provide technical and administrative support to clinical faculty in regards to clinical research protocols being conducted in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Provide primary patient care activities including acquisition and documentation of physical findings, procurement of laboratory specimens (blood, urine, feces, etc), provision of ICU/Critical Care, anesthesiology and special diagnostic procedures. Identifies potential prospective research candidates/patients, communicates and obtains authorizations/permissions, schedules and participates in follow-up examinations and re-evaluations of clients/patients enrolled in studies. Liaises with owners and referring practitioners to advertise ongoing studies and explain study enrollment criteria. Answers phone and email inquiries from owners and referring veterinarians. Performs data entry and keeps research databases/medical records current.
This position requires both clinical and administrative support for a broad range of ongoing clinical trials; flexibility, strong customer service skills, and a proactive attitude are essential. Qualifications include Licensed as a Veterinary Technician; ability to understand verbal and written instructions, good written and oral human relations and communication skills; ability to place intravenous catheters and perform endotracheal intubation; Knowledge of basic nursing skills as well as knowledge of basic anesthetic equipment and monitoring. Rabies prophylaxis is required and will be provided by employer. Licensed Veterinary Technician Certification Required.
Experience in anesthesia and/or intensive care in a veterinary medical setting; knowledge of CPR; experience in special procedures and electrodiagnostics.
