Local IT Specialists are generalists with a wide range of expertise in things like FileMaker databases, printing, hardware, automation scripts, Google or Microsoft Office apps, vendor management and general liaising with other IT providers to deliver services.
They may also have more specialized knowledge in specific technology tools or areas including Active Directory, server management, ITIL service management, IT security, SQL, web application development, systems analysis, managing firewalls, etc.
This position supports, manages and administers, hardware, physical and virtual servers, customized databases, productivity tools and associated business processes and applications within a wide variety of administrative units. This position shall perform general IT work as a Local IT Specialist (LITS).
Assignments shall include the configuration of applications and systems to campus standards and/or specialized business requirements; daily maintenance of systems; planning and consultation with campus units; maintaining compliance reporting; managing aspects of PCI compliant environments; managing aspects of HIPPA compliant workstations; managing technical aspects of Residential Networking; providing and delivery of training to colleagues, end users, and student technicians; documenting systems and processes using standard tools.
This position must be able to work effectively as part of a multi-unit functional team to develop and implement standards, plan for new and upgraded systems, establish and maintain client relations and deliver predictable services to a diverse constituency of clients including students and staff.
ResNet is the residential network and computer service provided to 9,000 students living at UCSC. This includes the Residence Halls, Campus Apartments, and Family Student Housing.
This role shall have primary responsibility for the technical support of ResNet including demonstrated expert knowledge in desktop support, resolving networking and wireless issues, using network support and analytical tools such as Safe Connect and NetDisco, delivering training to student technicians and liaising with various ITS staff to resolve escalated issues.
This role shall have primary and/or secondary responsibility for supporting advanced IT needs within various administrative units. Examples include managing custom databases, interacting with active directory and file servers, enhancing productivity through the development of scripts, Google apps, custom web applications, managing physical and virtual servers and managing mid-sized IT projects.
This role uses professional information technology best practices applying various standards, policies and practices to resolve a variety of issues associated with the management and delivery of services to a diverse clientele. Utilizes identifiable troubleshooting methodologies to analyze, develop and recommend potential solutions to quickly resolve technical issues. Requires the exercise of good judgment within defined policies, procedures and practices. Normally receives general instructions, with detailed instructions provided on complex new project assignments.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.
- Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to create and manage existing or new web applications (Drupal, MEAN stack) and custom database applications (MS Access, FileMaker Pro, MySQL, SQL Server).
- Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis.
