The general nature of the job: Responsible for coordinating all research activities for an ongoing HIV behavioral surveillance study designed to assess prevalence and trends in HIV, transmission behaviors, service utilization, and related social determinants among injection drug users, men who have sex with men, and individuals at increased risk of heterosexual HIV transmission in Baltimore.
The Primary duties and responsibilities: Oversee the administrative and scientific implementation of protocols for research, HIV testing, and specimen collection. As part of the study team, develop operational plans and oversee study-related activities for one or more studies. Develop and ensure adherence to study protocols for participant recruitment, data collection, and anonymous HIV testing. Oversee day-to-day research activities and manage operations of the off-site research location. Supervise field recruitment, data collection, specimen handling, and data management, including quality assurance measures. Manage and conduct formative research and produce associated reports. Oversee hiring, processing, training, orientation, supervision, and evaluation of staff and students for data collection and fieldwork activities, and provide general management support for scheduling, study supplies, maintaining records, and tracking and reporting study progress.
Ensure that all research staff complete appropriate training and certifications. Assist the PI in defining information and plans required to accomplish study goals. Determine project priorities and take initiative to exercise independent judgment to resolve issues. Manage project budgets, actively monitor project expenditures, manage petty cash, and compile reports as needed. Draft and assist in preparation of grant applications/renewals, contracts, and IRB ethical applications. Represent project to stakeholders, coordinate community collaborations and engagement, develop local surveys, and facilitate community access to study results. Participate in research presentations, draft and edit research manuscripts for scientific peer review publication and reports of various projects with opportunity for authorship.
Assist students in publication efforts. Lead regular staff meetings, participate in meetings with state, city, and local community-based organizations, and attend appropriate federal, state and local trainings. As needed, may assist with recruitment, obtaining informed consent, data collection, HIV counseling and testing, and data management. May be required to respond in a timely manner to special projects or queries related to the data.
