Summary Description: The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health (HDPFH) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health is seeking a qualified candidate to contribute to the ongoing research and development of a health systems strengthening project in Ghana. HDPFH is comprised of an interdisciplinary faculty whose work focuses on domestic and global issues related to health systems, community-based health care, sexual/reproductive, adolescent, child, family, and refugee health. The successful candidate will be based in HDPFH, with a primary appointment to the Advancing Research for Community Health Services (ARCHeS) program.The candidate will provide leadership on a research system development process, train local staff in health systems research, and collaborate with Mailman School faculty and external partners.Primary Responsibilities:Provide technical support and scientific leadership for the design of intervention studies for improving the accessibility of primary health care services with Ghanaian partners. Lead experimental or implementation research on the determinants of reproductive health, fertility, and child health or population- based studies of childhood survival.Mentor collaborating faculty, scientific staff, and students through research partnerships, workshops, and other activities that build capacity to develop and use evidence to guide policy and action.Contribute to graduate level teaching on topics such as international policy, program evaluation, health systems strengthening, implementation science, or demography.40% travel to Ghana and other countries to work with local and international partners, contribute to capacity-building activities, coordinate workshops and seminars, and supervise research activities.
Minimum Qualifications: Advanced degree (PhD or MD) with emphasis on public health, health systems, epidemiology, economics, demography or related fields.Expertise and experience in designing and conducting health systems evaluation, health policy/ system research, and implementation science in developing countries, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa.Advanced research skills in health systems, statistics, or epidemiology and an interest in developing new methodological and analytics approaches to health systems.A track record in publishing in peer-review journals, securing research funding, or the potential to generate external research funds.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching in a classroom setting to graduate level students, as well as mentoring and guiding their research, preferred.Previous experience working with health systems strengthening projects in sub-Saharan Africa or LMICs in areas including analyzing health systems performance, systems improvement, or quality of care preferred.Experience in longitudinal demographic or health research preferred.Strong background in research and peer reviewed publications.
